Cooler Master V850 Gold is one of four power supplies that the Taiwanese manufacturer has updated, in fact it is the most powerful in this new V Gold series. Below we have the 750, 650 and 550W, and all of them are manufactured by Chicony Power Technology with 100% Japanese capacitors and 80 Plus Gold and ETA-A certification from Cybenetics. It has an entirely modular design and semi-passive mode integrated into its ventilation system.

We will see in this review what this complete and powerful font suitable for high-end configurations offers us. But first, we must thank Cooler Master for trusting us to give us this model to carry out their review.

Cooler Master V850 Gold technical characteristics

Unboxing

Cooler Master V850 Gold, and the entire range of lower wattage, is presented to us in a single thick cardboard box and case-type opening, as always. In this box, the manufacturer has placed a lot of information regarding the font, as well as a complete black print on all its faces and photos of the equipment.

Inside, we find the power supply separated from all the components that are included and well through a cloth bag that we can close by pulling a cord. The cables come in another bag with similar characteristics, but clearly more basic.

So in total we should have the following components:

  • Source Cooler Master V850 Gold Bag of flat distribution cables Three-pin and 230V power supply cable Plastic clips Support manual

And this is it, later we will see in more detail everything about the cables, the quantity, the type and their length.

Design and exterior

Surely you can confuse this Cooler Master V850 Gold with its previous version, the Cooler Master V850 without the Gold badge on the front. It is true that they are two power supplies of the same power and certification, but this time the platform is not Seasonic, but Chiconi Power Technology. We would have preferred that they did not change manufacturers, but we did not doubt Chiconi's capacity and reliability.

As for design, it is another of its differential aspects, since we now have a somewhat more careful appearance and with higher quality veneers and paint on all external faces. The design is based on black color and the font is in a standard ATX format measuring 160mm long, 150mm wide and 86mm high.

They are quite forceful measures, and we must be very aware of the size that our chassis supports. And not only what comes in the specifications, but the side hole that there is to put it in correctly, since sometimes it will be very difficult to put sizes greater than 140 or 150 mm if we do not remove the disk cabinet or what we have in the middle. Anyway, it's just a recommendation.

Continuing with the external appearance, on one of the sides, we only see a reference to the brand and model, which is mainly the greatest aesthetic difference in the external area compared to the V850. While on the opposite side, we have the corresponding rating label for its power and output voltage, which is practically the same as the model we have referred to.

The upper face stands out for its huge 135mm fan with a dynamic-fluid bearing or FDB, a system that many manufacturers use in their new models for being very quiet. If we turn it over, the other side has absolutely nothing printed or glued to it. So the general aesthetics is extremely concise and simple, far from gaming models.

The ventilation system of the Cooler Master V850 Gold has a semi-passive control, which currently has many of the sources from other manufacturers. This system we will notice quickly if we go to the front side. In it, we find a large square button that, if we press in, we will activate the semi-passive mode or Hybrid Mode, while if we keep it removed, it will be deactivated. This allows the system to stop the fan when the power demand is below 40% of the available capacity.

Next, we are going to focus on the rear face of the Cooler Master V850 Gold where we will find the connector panel.

Cooler Master V850 Gold Wiring Management

This time we have good news, as the three cables available for 6 + 2-pin PCIe are 16AAWG type, with an outer diameter of approximately 2.25mm. We recall that the minimum required for the cables of a PSU will be 18AWG, admitting around 7A, while the 16AWG increase the conductivity benefits and decrease the resistance to current circulation, resulting in about 10A safely.

The rest of cables are of type 18AWG like those of CPU, ATX, and all SATA and MOLEX. They are more numerous and need less intensity in their conductors. In any case, all cables are flat in configuration, a great advantage for their management, as they do not have annoying capacitors at their ends, which contribute almost nothing to the performance of the source.

The connector count on the source output panel is as follows:

  • 1x 24 + 4-pin ATX split into two 10-pin and 18-pin connectors 5x connectors for PCIe or 8-pin CPU 4x SATA / MOLEX 5-pin

This is a fairly typical configuration in sources that exceed 850W, although we are lucky to have three SATA cables with a count of 12 connectors, while the normal number is two. In this way, we are occupying the complete rear panel of the source, something very positive because we will not have to buy any extra cables in case we have to use them all.

Let's make the following considerations about these cables:

  • Both SATA and MOLEX cables each have 4 connectors. An FDD extender is also included to connect 120mm long Diskette drives in flat configuration. Each of the three PCIe cables have two 6 + 2-pin connectors.. The best would have been to have at least one of them with only one connector, for the simple reason that many GPUs only have one connector and thus the result would be more aesthetic. In any case, these PCIe cables are much more robust 16AWG and They admit more amperage, so we will be sure of their operation even using the two connectors of a single cable. The rest of the cables are 18AWG, which is great news in terms of quality. They are all capacitors and very flexible.

Now we will make a length comparison between the cables of this Cooler Master V850 Gold and other sources analyzed by us.

The ATX cable is quite high in length and ranking high in our short list of sources. 650mm for this cable is more than enough for complete and custom designed towers. Meanwhile, we see that the CPU cables are quite normal, with 650 mm we will have enough, but not enough for some chassis. A clear example that you need long CPU cables is the Cooler Master Mastercase SL600M. This chassis has a peculiar compartment for the PSU located in the front area that will require quite long cables to reach the motherboard.

As for SATA and MOLEX connectors, we can see in the table above that they are purely standard measures for them, so it is not worth placing them in the comparison either.

Cooler Master V850 Gold internal review

As is a good habit, we are going to open this source to see what we find inside. The system is exactly the same as always, a sheet attached with four screws that we will have to remove next to the fan. Let's always keep in mind that this will remove the warranty from it.

The 135mm fan that we have installed is an Apistek SAC4H2 that is also found in other models of the brand with a configuration of 120mm. This FDB bearing fan is capable of a maximum of 1545 RPM, although it will always be in a range of 700-800 RPM. At this rate it generates a noise of about 15.4 dBA and 32.5 at maximum rate depending on the brand. Too bad Cybenetic does not have the results for this version V Gold Series, since they are available for the previous model.

On this occasion Cooler Master has also chosen the manufacturer Chicony Power Technology to build the PCB and assemble the electronic components of this source. The same happens with the V family before this one, if Chiconi has given it good results, they will have considered it the best option. For our part, we believe that Seasonic is the best option, since it is one of the most recognized manufacturers worldwide in this field. Best of all, we have a 10 year warranty.

A platform of a power supply is the base design that manufacturers like CWT have for different brands. If two sources of different brands have the same manufacturer and platform, then their internal design will be very similar, with exactly the same base, and differences in more concrete aspects such as capacitors, fan, wiring, etc.

Despite being the same manufacturer, in the Cooler Master V850 Gold we see noticeable changes in the distribution of the components, and it is not only about changing the name of the source. Now we find larger and better quality finned aluminum heatsinks to control the heat of the hottest elements, which will always be the switching transistors.

In the primary filtering we find an LLC type half-bridge design with the presence of DC-DC synchronous rectifiers on the 3.3V and 5V rails. It has a configuration similar to the price model with 4 Y capacitors, 2 X capacitors and two CM Chokes. The protection system is based on an NTC thermistor although without the presence of a relay and its peculiar click we will not hear it when starting our equipment. In your case we have a double EMI filter to provide a completely clean and stable voltage.

Above all, the primary condenser stands out as always, which in this case is built by the prestigious Japanese manufacturer Nichicon. Its capacity is 560µF at a maximum of 105 ° C.

In the same way, in the secondary filtering we also find two Nichicon electrolytic capacitors and quite a few solid capacitors distributed in the two vertical PCBs that will be in charge of filtering the energy that passes to the cables.

As with single-rail (single + 12V rail) configurations, OCP (overcurrent protection) protection has been omitted. The rest of the main ones we have all, against overvoltages or undervoltages, overloads, short circuits and high temperatures.

Test bench and performance test

This time we do not have tests and tests carried out by Cybenetics, so we will reduce the section to see a comparison of consumption between this and another source that we are analyzing with the same test bench:

Power supply

Cooler Master V850 Gold

We have measured consumption with a Green Blue wattmeter connected directly to the wall socket. In addition, we will test the semi-passive mode with its respective button to see the behavior of this power supply.

Consumption and energy

In our tests we have measured very similar values in the two sources compared, although it is true that the Cooler Master still gives an extra in less consumption compared to the Antec, which is even less powerful. We have captured these records with the components at the same temperature, so that nothing varies and is a reliable result.

It is noted then that the ETA-A certification is presented in this source, which ensures an efficiency of 90% or more. We can verify this in the graph that the manufacturer provides us on the product page, with peaks of 93% under a load of 50%.

Semi-passive or hybrid mode

As in other models that have this button, the Cooler Master V850 Gold has an analog control for this mode. This implies that the system relies on a temperature sensor to determine whether or not it needs to activate the fan when it passes a certain temperature threshold, and the same occurs when it passes a certain power threshold, in this case 40% (340W).

Hybrid mode activated

With the button in, we will activate this mode and immediately the fan will stop, because in our test bench we have not exceeded the threshold power at any time nor do we have high temperatures.

Being an analog control, the fan will be turning on or off while exceeding or lowering this 40% load, which will wear the bearings of the fan. An electronic control would have been the most recommended since the hysteresis makes these off and on less recurrent.

We have also removed the housing to see in more detail how the temperature is distributed in the different components. In general they are very good temperatures, never exceeding 60 ° C.

Hybrid mode disabled

With this mode we can already imagine what it is playing, and that is to have a fan always hovering around 700 and 800 RPM, which makes the temperature inside the fountain simply phenomenal. Due to the bearing system used, the fan is very quiet, and its 135 mm greatly facilitate correct air flow.

This time the highest temperature is located in the front outlet since the air flow makes all the hot air come out from underneath.

Final words and conclusion about Cooler Master V850 Gold

Cooler Mater has updated its best price platform with four new sources of 80 Plus Gold certification and ETA-A efficiency certification. These are completely modular sources, and in this case, the most powerful of all has a lot of connectivity, although that is, a 160mm ATX design. Ojito with the chassis that we have, and its size.

We have a double connection for CPU although the cables are not too long. For PCIe we have no less than three cables with two connections each, and in addition to type 16AWG to support greater current flow. No cable has capacitors, which is a great advantage in its management.

We recommend reading our updated guide to the best power supplies by price.

Something that should have improved in these new models is the semi-passive mode. Ideally, it would have been mounted digitally and more in line with a new generation font, although of course, this would make its price higher. In any case, its 135mm fan is surprisingly quiet, and it will practically not be necessary due to the excellent temperatures of the set.

This 850W power supply will be available for a price of about 129.99 euros approximately. Perhaps we would also have liked the manufacturer to be Seasonic, although its capacitors are still 100% Japanese. When we have them we will update the article, but it should more or less be placed next to the competition.
