Corsair is very popular for producing high-performance gaming peripherals and this time we bring you to analyze its Corsair HS45 headphones that seek to raise the mid-range to another level. How? Join us and we will show you.

Corsair Components is an American brand that has been waging war since 1994 in the world of peripherals and gaming.

Unboxing and design

We start as always with packaging. The Corsair HS45 Surround arrive presented in a thin black and yellow cardboard box with outstanding details in reflective resin.

On the cover we can see the presentation of the headphones with the logo of the brand and the name of its model. It comes to us accompanied by an outstanding note about its cross-platform compatibility for PC, mobile, XBox One, PS4 and Switch.

With the name of HS45 Surround we also have its highlights: Stereo Surround Headset with 7.1 Surround Sound. Two certificates also follow:

  • iCUE: Corsair interface software. Discord Certificate: Discord compatibility guarantee.

On the left and right sides of the box we again have the brand and model logo together with the slogan " Never miss a beat" .

Finally, on the back of the box is where we find the most information. On the one hand, we can read the most relevant data from these headphones translated into eight languages, such as:

  • Very comfortable memory foam pads and mesh. 50mm transducers adjusted to measure. Removable noise canceling microphone. Controls for volume and mute in the earpiece. 7.1 surround sound only available on PC.

Also translated into the eight main languages (English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Polish) we have the technical specifications. These data are those that you can find in the table that we have provided at the beginning of the analysis.

The total content of the box is summarized in:

  • Corsair HS45 Surround headphones. Removable microphone. USB 7.1 surround sound adapter. User manual. Warranty. Notes on environmental protection. Safety information and prevention of hearing loss.

Corsair HS45 headphones design

We start with the general aspects of the headphones. The outer structure is entirely in black plastic with a matte finish, while the internal one is in aluminum. The feel of the plastic is not slimy and it makes a very good impression from the outset.

The currently available color model of these Corsair HS45 is Charcoal, although the catalog is expanded to blue, red and green.

The band

Above the upper arch we have in relief the name of Corsair with a shiny finish.

Inside the plush we have the aluminum extension arches. These have a matte finish and we can extend them in a total of nine notches.

The plush padding is fabric on the inner top. It has a very soft, soft and quite thick touch, so the comfort we can obtain is very high.

Regarding its flexibility, we must tell you that it allows it to a certain extent. Obviously they are not made to force their position but they allow mobility. Our recommendation (with these and many other headphones) is that you take into account the limitations of the model and do not do crazy things.

The headphone

Without a doubt the most important part. The piece transmits a great solidity to us. We found that we have a vertical turn with about 45º. We also have a very slight horizontal movement in the extension hinges but we don't recommend forcing them too much.

Outside we find a double structure separated by a shiny black plastic band. Right in the center we have the Corsair logo with the same aluminum finish as that of the supraural band structure. The only difference that we can perceive here is that in this detail it has aluminum with a slightly ribbed relief texture.

Continuing with the exterior finish of the HS45, we move on to the control buttons. Here we can find two of them: a switch to mute the microphone and the volume regulator. Both are located on the left earcup in the area behind the cable connector.

Next, we inspect the interior. We find a foam rubber padding also lined in black fabric as well as that of the upper arch. This lining is obviously removable to make it easier to wash with use, although putting it back in its place can be considered a feat in its entirety due to how tight it is.

The microphone

There are many good things we can say about it, so let's highlight the best two and continue from there:

  • It is removable. It is resistant.

And is it done? Do not come. Come on, seriously. The structure of the microphone as such offers us great rigidity. The connection to the earphone is through a 3.5 jack that has a reinforced PVC socket. Regarding the microphone cable, it is lined with a spiral steel structure covered in black plastic. This makes it maintain its position without moving over time as it can happen with other models and it can be very annoying.

Finally, we come to the microphone itself. Its sensitivity varies between -40dB and ± 3dB and it has external noise cancellation. This can be seen with the perforation on the nozzle facing outward.

The wire

We turn to the cable, and we must tell you: we are usually a little disappointed that the headphone cables are not twisted, but you should know that with the HS45 we do not miss it. Why? Well, because the extra coating that it has is in effect of plastic but reaching a thickness of 4mm. The touch of this cable is consistent and transmits great resistance.

The termination of its ends, both in the headphones and in the 3.5 jack, has an extra PVC reinforcement in the socket to prevent excessive bending. In addition, its total length is 1.80m, which is perfect for a gaming environment.

If we have to fault it, it is that the 3.5 jack is mixed with microphone and audio, but we did not find a splitter for both channels in the box. This is because the model is strongly focused on using it on PC with the 7.1 USB surround sound adapter while on other devices it consists of stereo sound and mixed microphone.

We will delve into this aspect in the commissioning section of the Corsair HS45.

The USB 7.1 surround sound adapter

We come to the strong point that sets the Corsair HS45 apart from other mid-range headphones, and that is the 7.1 surround sound adapter. It is finished in glossy black plastic with the Corsair logo printed in gray.

Something that we must clarify in this review is that the 7.1 sound as already indicated by the Corsair itself is available only for PC. In order to use the sound device correctly, we must therefore download the iCUE software.

This program is very light and we must have it active to use surround 7.1. We can also have it for stereo but we will not perceive as much impact. In the software we can find the option to choose between stereo and 7.1 with a single button, and if you have several Corsair devices it is possible that other options can also be configured with it.

The first time we start it we have a default profile, although it is possible to create more to our personal taste. It is in the Panel section where we can fiddle with the different sound combinations listed:

  • Pure Direct Movie Theater FPS Competition Clear Chat Bass Boost

In each of them we can see that different audio frequencies are emphasized or instead, they are balanced. There are options that enhance the bass while others try to simulate something similar to Home Cinema. The result is quite successful and we quite liked how it looks both for listening to music and for movies. There are games that lend themselves better than others, but in general the surround effect with 7.1 is satisfactory. It is certainly something very subjective since many users are strongly used to stereo sound and it may seem strange to us, but you should know that the software does a good job.

Final words and conclusions about Corsair HS45

The Corsair HS45 have left us with a very good taste in the mouth. Its low weight and details such as integrated controls and removable microphone we really liked. It is true that the cable is not twisted, but it has an excellent thickness and is resistant. The stereo sound is scandalous, so those gamers of living room who do not play on PC should not envy those who can opt for Surround 7.1.

Corsair HS45 Surround are launched with a starting price of € 49.99.

This type of audio is not that it works miracles in general, but the iCUE software offers different possible combinations to choose according to the use we want to give them. Overall we think it's a good choice for mid-range headsets without crazy budgets.
