Corsair NIGHTSWORD RGB has been added to Corsair's exclusive collection of gaming mice with a new name and innovative customization solutions. In addition to an impressive design with side flap and rubber grips, it comes with 10 programmable Omron buttons including sniper, and a weight setting system that is automatically detected by iCUE to calculate the mouse's center of gravity.
It has the most powerful optical sensor, the 18, 000 DPI Pixart 3391 capable of offering the best for FPS, MMOG / MOBA and RPG. Would you dare to buy it? Before that, your best bet is to see our in-depth review of this team
And of course always thank Corsair for the trust they place in us by sending us this impressive mouse for analysis.
Corsair NIGHTSWORD RGB technical characteristics
Unboxing
Corsair NIGHTSWORD RGB maintains the brand's distinctive presentation for peripherals. It is nothing more than a small flexible cardboard box with its own yellow and black colors and a large photograph of the mouse seen from above. On the back we will find all the relevant information on the device and a couple more photos showing that the weight can be changed.
We open the box and we have a complex clamping system with a cardboard and plastic mold that keeps the mouse immobile and away from other accessories. It is one of the fasteners that we can find for a mouse, and of course, Corsair is behind this idea.
In this bundle we will have the following elements:
- Corsair NIGHTSWORD RGB Mouse Plastic Case with Weights Warranty and User Guide
Indeed, we have a small box where the weights are stored that we can install on this mouse. Make sure you have a total of 6 of them. Of course, if you are not sure how to use them, what you will have to do is first, see this review, and second, see the user instructions.
Exterior design
We already go to see the design of this Corsair NIGHTSWORD RGB, and in this case it is a gaming team that has quite a bit aesthetically speaking. Here we run away from simple lines and the possibility of having a minimalist ambidextrous mouse. It is just the opposite, a team full of curves, gaps and above all buttons and lighting that will delight design fans.
Different types of plastics have been used for its casing, some with a slight roughness for grip and others on the smooth and shiny side and button. On the upper part and on the cuffs we have a rubber coating with a nice texture motif. But undoubtedly the most striking thing is that huge left fin, with a great curvature where you can perfectly fit your thumb.
The approximate measurements of this mouse are 130 mm long, 85 mm wide and 48 mm high. Knowing this, you can already imagine that the preferred grip will be the palm type, and it is that it is a very large and very voluminous mouse with that piece of fin. The initial weight and without any weights will be 119 g according to the manufacturer.
Let's start by looking in detail at the Corsair NIGHTSWORD RGB top keypad which consists of a total of 7 buttons and the wheel.
In this model, Corsair has installed Japanese Omron switches for all buttons, although it is the two main buttons that will offer durability of more than 50 million clicks. These main buttons have a very curved surface to fit our fingers, and also a micro-rough finish to improve grip. They have a very small travel and a medium-soft click with enough sensitivity that we know very well from the ELITE and the IRONCLAW.
Right at the edge of the left click we have two more buttons, which initially come configured to increase or decrease DPI in a total of three jumps. The activation path is slightly longer than that of the main buttons and the truth, they do not hinder the main ones at all.
We go to the upper area, with two other buttons that in this case are predefined to change the configuration profile. They are quite large and harder than the rest, to avoid accidentally hitting them. We finish with a huge wheel with fluted rubber that adds very little and the jumps are very little marked. I think Corsair wheels are some of the best we can find in a mouse.
We continue with the buttons located in the lateral area, for a total of three. The two typical to navigate forward or backward and in this case an interesting button for sniper mode. And what stands out the most, the large lateral fin with ribbed rubber that serves to support the thumb on the palm grip and provide the equipment with great stability.
A mouse of this category should have a sniper and here it is, with a large contact surface for pressing and quite advanced in terms of position, so much so that we must place the palm of the mouse well above it to get there. I think a few millimeters more behind, it would have had better comfort, although we understand that the manufacturer does it so that it does not hinder and we do not press it by accident.
And just in front of the two navigation buttons we find three small LEDs that indicate the activated DPI level at all times. These buttons and indicator are perfectly placed for normal use, with a wide travel and hard click to avoid accidentally pressing them.
On the right side we will only find the holding cuff also covered in rubber and slightly curved inwards. Seen this way, the Corsair NIGHTSWORD RGB have practically identical curvature at the front and rear.
And notice, something I did not like about the design is the type of connection with the USB cable. It consists of a flexible rubber macaroon, although of considerable hardness that comes out very much compared to the plane of the mouse. It is a good way to collide with objects or to bend it due to knocks and to facilitate wear. In this case, I would have preferred it to be rather inside the mouse, as in other IRONCLAW type devices.
With this frontal photo it seems that a snake is about to attack us. The mouse stands out for its rounded curves practically in all its extension, quite high and covered with rubber in the entire rear area so that our flat does not slip. Does anyone doubt the type of grip?
With the images we must also identify the lighting zones that are a total of four. The easiest to see is the area of the Corsair logo, and if we continue down we will have three elements on the back also illuminated. Then we have to head towards the front area, where there are four other divided areas right in front and of course the wheel itself.
To finish, we go to the lower area and we will be able to see, in addition to the sensor, five enormous PTFE legs that cover practically the entire front and rear area, in addition to the lateral fin. But this area has more surprises than we will see now.
Weight settings
And precisely this surprise consists in the possibility of configuring the weight of the mouse in a quite advanced way, more than what we have been seeing until now. What we must indicate is that the initial weight of the mouse since it is quite large, 119 grams is not a little. In this sense, for a weight-configurable FPS mouse, a starting weight of about 90 grams would have given a greater range.
Well, what we will have to do is pull with the finger of this central area from the tab on the back to disengage the hexagonal area around the sensor. Once removed, we will see a total of six cylindrical holes to place the weights. Very important is the fact that each hole has two sensors that detect the type of weight that we are going to put.
We have a small plastic receptacle that allows you to store these six weights. We have two types and, consequently, two pesos:
- Hollow weights: these weights have a weight of 2.8 grams each Solid weights: these weights do not have the distinctive hollow and have a weight of 4.5 grams each
ICUE software has an option that allows calculating the center of mass of the mouse based on the occupied weight gaps. It also gives us the total weight of the equipment, which can be a maximum of 141.9 grams.
We have proposed to weigh all these elements, to see the real weight of the equipment, and in our case, it is about 6 grams less if we add all these weights and the equipment, that is, about 136 grams.
Corsair NIGHTSWORD RGB lighting
Without a doubt one of the most complete systems that Corsair has made to date, a unique visual section for a very gaming design. A little loaded, it's true, but for users who like different things, they are in luck. The lighting is really striking and with the possibility of independently customizing it in these four areas using the Corsair iCUE software, which we will see later.
Optical sensor
The last section of the physical hardware will be dedicated to the sensor and connectivity of the Corsair NIGHTSWORD RGB. It is an optical sensor well known to the latest Corsair models, the Pixart PWM 3391 that offers a resolution of 18, 000 DPI. It is the most powerful optical sensor that can be mounted and it is not only due to the amount of DPI. It is capable of supporting speeds of 400 IPS (inches per second) and accelerations of 50G. Ideal for competitive use since its high resolution and speed does not let any pixel escape from the contact surface.
We will be able to manage many aspects of the sensor's performance from iCUE, for example, the 3 DPI levels it supports, perhaps 5 would have given a more complete range of the equipment. The positive thing about this sensor is that it allows us to modify its speed pixel by pixel or DPI by DPI. As normal, we will have a polling rate of 1000 Hz, although from the software we can change it in 125, 250 and 1000 MHz. The mouse will allow us to store a total of three configuration profiles within the mouse itself and be able to take them with us to use when be necessary.
Regarding connectivity, it is quite clear, it is via USB 2.0 / 3.0 with a 1.8 meter long cable and a firm textile mesh throughout. Outside, out of curiosity, it has a rubber grip area to be able to connect / disconnect it better.
Corsair iCUE software
Corsair iCUE will be the quintessential software we will need to get the most out of Corsair NIGHTSWORD RGB. It would not make sense to have this mouse if we did not install the program, since it provides us with a huge amount of customization possibilities. Before seeing the options, if we go to the Configuration section, we will have the possibility to update the firmware, the software or modify the polling rate of the mouse. We must have the iCUE version 3.16.x or higher for the mouse to be detected.
And the first thing a user should know is the ability to manage profiles. This program is capable of storing all the mouse settings at any given time in profiles. We can create an unlimited number of them, and in the mouse we can save up to 3 of them. Initially, the top two buttons are configured to change profiles.
The next section we will touch on is the button customization. iCUE allows us to modify the 10 mouse buttons with normal functions, multimedia, keys, and even macros of various functions. Likewise, we will have the possibility to customize the four lighting zones of the Corsair NIGHTSWORD RGB and independently. This means that we can apply different effects in each zone, remember that iCUE works in layers, so we will have to assign one or more to each zone.
The next four sections will be devoted to customizing sensor and mouse capabilities. The first one is dedicated to configuring the three mouse DPI levels, plus the sniper mode level (slower). We can assign a color to each level so that it appears in the mouse marker. The second section allows us to activate the pointer position improvement and the angle adjustment. It is interesting from a design point of view, if we are going to make straight lines, but they make the mouse acceleration worse and I do not recommend activating them to play. The third section offers the possibility of calibrating the mouse for the surface, varying the lift off distance of the sensor to make it more precise on the surface in question.
And finally we have the fourth section, which is the great novelty, since, with it and the space sensors for the weights, it will calculate the total weight of the mouse in real time and will calculate where the center of mass (center of maximum balance) is according to the gaps occupied. What is this for? for example, so that the user knows if the mouse is going to be heavier in the back or in the front, thus adjusting the balance according to the shape of its grip.
Grip and sensitivity tests
Let's see now the sensations regarding the grip that this Corsair NIGHTSWORD RGB gives us from my point of view with my hand of approximately 190 x 110 mm.
And in this case that concerns us, the truth is that there are not too many doubts about the best way to catch the mouse. It is certainly through Palm Grip or palm grip even with large hands. The design practically forces us to do this, although it is also true that with a claw-type grip or Claw Grip we are going to be quite comfortable, or a mixture between the two, of course.
And I say in palm because we are going to need to have a fairly advanced position to be able to get to the sniper button correctly, if we are going to use it. The feel of the side cuffs is exquisite, covered in ribbed rubber and a perfect fixation on the left wing, so much that it gives enough heat when we have been awhile.
Similarly, the feel of the buttons is also very good, with a click of medium hardness in all of them, and a little softer the main buttons. A very good ergonomics for the mentioned grip and especially large hands, since a smaller hand here will have a worse time. In addition, the weight is considerable, 114 grams starting according to our scale, so in my opinion it is a highly recommended mouse for MMO, MOBA, RPG games and that style, due to its large number of buttons. I see it a bit heavy for FPS and also the grip versatility is low due to the design.
Let us now turn to see the typical tests we perform on the Corsair NIGHTSWORD RGB sensor .
- Variance in movement (Acceleration): The procedure consists of putting the mouse in an enclosure that allows about 4 cm of movement. Then we move the equipment from one side to another and at different speeds. In this way the line that we are painting in Paint will take a measure, if the lines vary in length, it will mean that it has acceleration, otherwise they will not have it. And we will say exactly the same as with other Corsair mice, the sensor performance is perfect, but if we activate the pointer position improvement we will introduce a strong acceleration that will worsen our precision.
- Pixel Skipping: Performing slow movements, and at different DPI in 4K resolution, pixel skipping is not seen in any of the settings. An 18, 000 DPI sensor with one-to-one stagger capability absolutely skips none of these pixels. And if that were the case, we have a calibration option in the iCUE software to use it. Tracking: Tests in games or through the selection and dragging of windows, the movement is flawless without experiencing accidental jumps or plane changes. With the capacity of 400 in / s and 50 G, it will support movements much faster than our hands can carry out. This will be crucial for FPS games where sharp turns need precision. Performance on surfaces: It has worked correctly on hard surfaces such as wood, metal and of course on mats of different types. The performance in opaque and translucent crystals is also correct. We value having the option of calibration and also calculation of the center of gravity from iCUE.
And since we also have in iCUE the option to activate the precision improvement and the adjustment of the angles, we are going to make a show of dexterity by drawing three squares with each of the options activated or deactivated. In this way we can see if they are really worth it and what is its usefulness
And the truth is that the difference between the first square and the last one is of a notable improvement, if we tried to do it several times in the end we would make it perfect. Well, this is recommended in the case of working with design programs, for example. But for games we strongly recommend deactivating these options, we will avoid imprecise scrolling and also with a lot of acceleration, something critical when playing in FPS.
Final words and conclusion about Corsair NIGHTSWORD RGB
We got to the end of this long review, and there was a lot to say about this Corsair NIGHTSWORD RGB. Let's try to be concise, regarding the design we only have to congratulate Corsair aggressiveness and a pure gaming aspect, with multiple rubber areas, a huge lateral fin for better support and legs that slide perfectly.
It is true that ergonomics is very good in palm grip, but not so much in other grips, leaving this aspect somewhat limited in versatility. The distribution of these 10 programmable Omron buttons is fully geared towards your gaming, RPG, MOBA, MMOG and personally slightly less in competitive RPG. For the simple fact of being a somewhat heavy and big mouse.
Take the opportunity to visit our guide to the best mice on the market
We can configure this weight from 119 g to 141.9 using 6 weights, although the initial weight is already somewhat high. From iCUE, in addition to being able to manage many aspects such as its four lighting zones, it also calculates the center of mass of the mouse, calibrates the surface to optimize this perfect Pixart 3391 sensor that works so well.
We finish with the cost of this Corsair NIGHTSWORD RGB, which is already on the market for a price on its official page of 79.90 euros, settling as the highest cost model along with the extreme configurations of the brand, although improving performance with this new sensor and lighting.
