We started the collaboration with Cougar, a well-known manufacturer of first-line peripherals that has sent us one of its best mice, the Cougar Minos X5 that has the best sensor on the market, the PixArt PMW 3360, which has demonstrated impeccable performance. It is a mouse oriented to users with small hands and a grip of the claw type although it will be necessary to see how well it adapts to other circumstances. It also doesn't lack an RGB lighting system and a 2000 Hz ultra polling that makes it the fastest mouse on the market.

Unboxing and design

Cougar has used its corporate colors for the presentation of the Cougar Minos X5, the mouse comes in a cardboard box that combines black with orange. On the front we see an image of the mouse as well as a badge that informs us of its RGB LED lighting system. If we turn the box around we find all its features and specifications in several languages, including Spanish.

The box has a flap that, when opened, reveals a window that allows us to see the product before buying it, all a detail although with the rise of electronic commerce it is less and less useful, in any case it is a detail to be appreciated.

We open the box and we find a card of the brand's products, the manual and some stickers with the Cougar logo in different styles.

Finally we see the Cougar Minos X5 in all its splendor, as we have said it is a medium-sized mouse that is oriented to claw-type grips although if your hands are small it will also go quite well with a more traditional palm-type grip. The mouse is attached to a rubberized cable with a length of 1.8 meters and ending in a gold-plated USB connector to improve contact and prevent corrosion. This type of rubberized cable offers less resistance than twisted cables, so it will be beneficial for some users.

The Cougar Minos X5 is made entirely of black plastic that looks very good quality, the use of plastic allows the weight to be kept at just 88 grams without counting the cable making it a very light mouse which is focused on games that need very fast actions, for example FPS. Its dimensions are 120 mm X 65 mm X 38 mm.

At the top of the Cougar Minos X5 we can see its wheel next to the two main buttons and a button to change the DPI mode. The wheel is rubberized to offer a better grip on the finger and its displacement is very pleasant with a marked route, its click is somewhat hard which will help us avoid accidental pulsations.

The two main buttons are made of separate plastic pieces and are in a very accessible position. Under these buttons are hidden some OMRON switches of the highest quality that guarantee us a useful life of 50 million keystrokes, it is noticeable that we are dealing with a high-end mouse. Its pulsation is quite smooth and with a typical noise.

We now turn to see the sides of this Cougar Minos X5, in both cases a piece of rubber has been placed that helps to achieve a better grip to prevent it from slipping from our hands when using it in quick movements. Two additional buttons have been placed on the right side, while on the left we find nothing beyond the rubber area.

Now we look at the rear area of the Cougar Minos X5 and we see the logo of the brand in white, this is part of the lighting system next to the wheel as we will see later.

In the lower area we can see two large Teflon surfers for a smooth glide of the Cougar Minos X5 on our mat. Cougar Minos X5 works with Cougar UIX software that allows us to take full advantage of each of its capabilities, this program can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website and its installation does not hide any secrets. The first time we open Cougar UIX it will ask us to update the mouse firmware, we just have to accept and let it work, the operation only takes a few seconds.

We open the application and we find a unique section where all the settings are, in this way we will always have everything in sight so that we do not miss anything. First we look at the performance settings where we can assign the values ​​of its four DPI modes independently for the X and Y axes, the DPI of the sniper mode, the ultra polling from 125 Hz to 2000 Hz, the elevation distance on three levels, surface calibration and angle adjustment.

We now turn to see a complete profile manager through which we can create a multitude of usage profiles, we can also associate an image to each profile and the games and programs with which we want them to load automatically. In this sense it is one of the best software we have tested.

We now turn to see the key assignment, the Cougar Minos X5 has six programmable buttons to which we can assign a total of eight programmable functions counting the two directions of the wheel. We can assign a multitude of functions including multimedia controls and sniper mode.

Cougar Minos X5 is the first product of this brand that we have analyzed and the feeling has been very positive, of course, from a mouse with the PMW 3360 sensor we can only hope for the best as long as its manufacturer has done its homework well and this is the case. The precision of the mouse is unquestionable and in terms of performance we can not fault it, it is simply one of the best on the market as it could not be otherwise with this sensor. The management software is very complete and without a doubt helps us to get the most out of it, it is also very well organized and extremely easy to use. Personally I find it one of the best mouse management programs if not the best.

The ergonomics of the Cougar Minos X5 has been excellent for me although it is true that this point is very personal for each user, my hands are small and this mouse is one of those that best adapt to my grip. In case of having large hands it will be more suitable for claw-type grips than palm. The construction quality is very high and its body is made of very good quality plastic, there is nothing metal but it is not missing.
