Cougar Phontum is a gaming headset that has already been on the market for several months, it is a model that stands out mainly for including 53mm neodymium drivers that are covered by a layer of graphene, which promises to improve the sound quality. They also stand out for their comfortable design, and for including a set of interchangeable pads. All this without forgetting the great compatibility offered by its 3.5 mm jack connector.

First of all, we thank Cougar for the trust placed in our team by transferring the product to us for analysis.

Cougar Phontum technical characteristics

Unboxing and design

The Cougar Phontum headset comes in a cardboard box based on a black and orange color scheme, the brand's corporate ones and that we usually find in all its products. The box has a very good quality print, showing high resolution images and the most important features of this headset.

We open the box and the first thing we see is the headset, very well protected and accommodated by a plastic frame, thus preventing its movement during transport so that it reaches the hands of its end user pristine. Next to the headset we find a black cardboard box inside which all the accessories are hidden, this time we find a removable microphone, an extension cable with a control knob, a set of replacement pads, thinner than the ones that come on, and documentation.

We especially highlight the inclusion of replacement pads, they are quite abundant and soft padding, and are finished in synthetic leather to offer great comfort and good insulation from the outside. The cushions that are attached to the headset are exaggeratedly thick, it is good to have more conventional ones attached.

We are already focusing on the Cougar Phontum headset, this is based on a symmetrical design of a simple bridge headband, the headband is made in black with orange details, a real brand of the house. This headband is padded on the inside to improve wearing comfort, something that most gamers will appreciate, who often spend many hours of vice.

This headband is manufactured with a metal frame to offer great durability, it includes a mechanism that allows height adjustment to adapt to the heads of all users. In this case the height adjustment system is next to the domes, its operation is very simple, since we only have to apply a little force to vary the position.

Cougar Phontum stands out for offering really large and abundant pads, which will help to achieve better insulation from outside noise. They are the largest pads I have seen in a headset and by far the difference, they are also very soft and are finished in synthetic leather. Removing them is as simple as pulling them with a little force, once they are removed we can fit the ones attached by Cougar additionally if we wish.

Inside the domes are hidden 53mm neodymium drivers, these stand out for being graphene coated to reduce distortions and offer a cleaner sound. These drivers offer a response frequency of 20 Hz - 20 kHz, an impedance of 32 ohms, and a sensitivity of 98 dB / mW at 1 kHz. Its large size of 53 mm should help reproduce richer and deeper bass without sacrificing the rest of the frequencies, something that is usually very common in gaming headsets.

In the left dome we find a 3.5 mm female jack connector to place the attached detachable microphone. This has a unidirectional pattern, noise cancellation, a frequency range from 100 Hz to 10 kHz and a sensitivity of -45dB ± 3dB.

Finally, they have a 1.2 meter meshed cable that ends in a 3.5mm TRRS jack connector, which includes the connection of both the speakers and the microphone and is compatible with a large number of devices.

Final words and conclusion about Cougar Phontum

It is time to make a final assessment of the Cougar Phontum headset. Start by talking about the most important thing, the sound quality. Cougar Phontum offers the typical V-sound profile that we usually see in almost all gaming headsets. This means that you boost the bass and treble above the midrange. The bass has quite a bit of punch, something fans of shooting games will like.

The sound is quite closed and with a not very wide sound scene, which makes them not recommended headphones for listening to music, although they can be used perfectly. If we change the pads for the thinner ones we see how the insulation improves, something contrary to what you might expect at first. This seems because they achieve a better closure of the ear inside.

The main weak point of this headset is its microphone, which is clearly two steps behind the set. This microphone captures the voice with little intensity and in an unnatural way, it will serve to communicate in our games and little else. The noise reduction is also not up to it, and that despite being unidirectional.

Finally, they are quite comfortable to wear in long sessions, something to which the excellent padding of the pads undoubtedly contributes. Cougar Phontum is for sale for an approximate price of 50 euros.
