Shortly after the OnePlus 3T was launched, we started to receive rumors from its successor. According to a report from China the next terminal would not carry the nickname 4 but 5. It also says it would wear a ceramic body like that of a version of the OnePlus X that they experimented with.

This number doesn't add up much…

It is not surprising that product lines with established trajectories change their numbers or skip numbers for various reasons. A very popular recent case in consumer electronics is the jump from the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 to the Note 7 to go hand in hand with the Galaxy S line. Also the one that should be Windows 9, if it had followed the numbering after 7 and 8, it was renamed Windows 10 because some programs checked if the version was Windows 9-.

On the other hand, on other occasions the jump in numbering is due to superstition. In East and Southeast Asian countries number four is considered unlucky and therefore avoided, as is the example of buildings that avoid 4 and 14 for plants and residences. The languages of these countries come from the same family, and in many of them "four" is pronounced the same as "death".

Since OnePlus is a Chinese manufacturer, it is understandable that they make such a decision. We are not affected by users, and since enthusiasts are their consumer base, most likely they all understand the numbering of the upcoming OnePlus 5.

Ceramic body on the OnePlus, is that a good thing?

In case the OnePlus 5 carried a high-tech ceramic material, it would not be the first smartphone to do so. OnePlus X itself had a minority version with a ceramic body that helped them experiment with the material and suppliers. The Xiami Mi 5 had a superior version with ceramic material, as well as the Xiaomi Mi Mix concept phone.

There is not much data comparing how different materials affect the performance of devices. Since the materials used in these ceramic bodies are refractive (they withstand high temperatures and contain heat) they could prevent the heat generated by the smartphone components from dissipating into the environment. Nor has it been reported that numbers of users of these phones have reported that the temperature rises worryingly during intensive use.

On the other hand, the inclusion of these materials would make bodies harder than aluminum, so they would scratch and itch less.
