Radeon VII has just hit the streets and has already bumped into Der8auer, one of the most recognized overclockers in between. Using dry ice, Der8auer managed to overclock the graphics card to an impressive 2100MHz, although it also reveals that the drivers are very green.

Radeon VII undergoes extreme overclocking

First off, Der8auer warns that manual overclocking is broken, for both the GPU and the memories. Performing manual overclocking does nothing or causes performance to drop, nor does it work with third-party tools.

Der8auer had to use Radeon Wattman to do automatic overclocking, which does work as it should.

Only with the use of dry ice, the famous overclocker was able to achieve maximum frequencies 2100 MHz for the GPU. These frequencies would be impossible to achieve with the triple fan cooling system that comes standard. To reach that maximum peak of 2149 MHz, the temperature was -60 degrees Celsius.

Radeon controllers don't work well

The interesting thing would be to know how far these frequencies could go using manual overclocking and not an automatic one. AMD will have to work soon to be able to solve the problems with the drivers of Radeon VII and to be able to take full advantage of this new GPU.

GamersNexus, who spoke to Der8auer, had similar issues with all the overclocking and monitoring software they tested, so this seems to be a widespread problem already.

Radeon VII launched today February 7 with limited stock for European territory and with performance that promises to rival the RTX 2080 and 2070.
