The famous German overclocker der8auer has published a video on his YouTube channel in which you can see the process of deliding an AMD Ryzen 5 2600 processor, one of the latest models that AMD has put on the market.

The new second-generation Ryzen processors, based on Pinnacle Ridge silicon, come with an Indio solder to bond and IHS to the die of the processor, making the delid process much more expensive and difficult than for processors that They have thermal paste at the junction between both parts.

In order to remove the IHS from the Ryzen 5 2600, it was necessary to heat the processor to melt the Indio solder, something that der8auer has achieved in the oven at a temperature of 170-180ºC. Once the processor has been hot enough, the overclocker has used its tool to remove the IHS and expose the die. The IHS is then replaced using the Thermal Grizzly thermal compound consisting of liquid metal, one of the best conductors of heat.

Once the Ryzen 5 2600 processor was overclocked at 4.1 GHz with 1.35V, the temperature difference was only 4ºC, a very small difference that shows that the new AMD processors already come standard with an excellent thermal interface between the IHS and the die.

As a conclusion it can be said that the delid is a process that is not worth it in the second generation Ryzen, since the advantage that we obtain with it is very small, and if we run a high risk of irreversibly damaging our processor.
