The PCI Express 5.0 standard appears to be ready for official release. At CES 2019, PCI Express version 4.0 began to rage, with AMD confirming that its third and second generation Ryzen processors will offer support for the standard later this year.
Documentation on PCI Express 5.0 version 1.0 will be released during the first quarter of 2019
PCIe 4.0 may be in its infancy, but that doesn't mean PCI-SIG should be stopped. In 2017, the organization announced that it planned to accelerate the development of PCI Express 5.0, with plans to offer a 4x increase in bandwidth per line compared to current PCIe 3.0.
Now, the organization has confirmed that it plans to release its official documentation for PCIe 5.0 version 1.0 this quarter, months before PCIe 4.0 will be available on already commercial motherboards. Likewise, they ensure that PCIe 5.0 will be compatible with PCIe 4.0, 3.x, 2.x and 1.x.
This means that within two years PCI-SIG will have updated its PCI Express standard to offer 32GT / s of bandwidth, which is fast enough to utilize the full potential of major NVMe SSDs like the Samsung 970 Pro in a single PCIe 5.0 line, which would be an amazing achievement.
It should be noted that it will be some time before PCIe 5.0 is available on conventional hardware. PCI-SIG released the PCIe 4.0 standard in October 2017, and AMD plans to launch its first PCIe 4.0-compatible processors in mid-2019, as well as corresponding motherboards. Intel has not disclosed its PCIe 4.0 plans in its public product roadmap. With this in mind, PCIe 5.0 should not be expected on conventional hardware platforms until around 2021.
