A ComputerBase comparison indicates that Nvidia's GeForce GTX 1080 performs noticeably worse than the Radeon RX Vega 64 when high dynamic range is enabled in gaming. One of the most notable cases is Destiny 2 in 4K resolution, in which the GPU went from 61 FPS to 49 FPS. In the same game, the Radeon RX Vega 64 only loses 9% performance when activating HDR, going from 55 FPS to 50 FPS and beating the Nvidia card, which was above SDR.

In most ComputerBase tested games, the Radeon RX Vega card suffers from a completely negligible performance difference when going from SDR to HDR. On average, the Nvidia GTX 1080 loses 10% performance in HDR over SDR, while the Radeon RX Vega 64 only loses 2%.

For now Nvidia has not given any explanation, but it seems clear that something in the drivers or hardware is significantly hampering performance in HDR. It could simply be that the Nvidia drivers are simply not being optimized for HDR as they should be, which could result in a quick fix, or the cause could be a bit deeper in the architecture. We will have to be vigilant throughout the next few days.
