Phison's E16 controller was just the beginning of the company's march towards PCIe 4.0, an opening act towards what will become a more substantial market over time. At the Flash Memory Summit, Phison called himself "your leader in PCIe Gen4 SSDs, " confirming his plans to continue to drive SSD performance. Today's Phison PS5016-E16 controller is used in all PCIe 4.0 solid state drives on the market, supporting maximum read / write speeds of 5, 000 / 4, 400 MBps respectively and a maximum of 750, 000 / 750, 000 read / write IOPS 2.6W random power. With the new PS5018-E18 controller, Phison plans to offer read / write speeds of 7 GB / s, and a maximum of 1, 000K read / write IOPS.
To do this, Phison has moved from TSMC's 28nm lithograph to the company's new 12nm manufacturing process, increased the power consumption of its controllers to a maximum of about 3W, and packed three processors in its silicon. 32-bit ARM Cortex R5 instead of two. The speed of each memory channel has also been increased from 800 MT / s to 1200MT / s, allowing much of the controller speed increase.

This new controller will also support a DDR4 / LPDDR4 cache and will be able to support TLC and QLC NAND. Phison will also jump to NVMe 1.4 protocol with this controller.
In basic terms, Phison hopes to approach the limits of PCIe 4.0 with its next-generation PS5018-E18 controller, supporting a maximum of eight memory channels and up to 8TB of memory.
They hope that this new controller will start to be used in the second quarter of 2020.
