The company Sony, who is currently working on one of the types of sensors used in the digital cameras of the upcoming iPhone 7, may have been affected by the Japan earthquake that shook this Saturday, April 16, in the city of Kumamoto., known as the country of "Silicon Island", where its main production base for image sensors is located.

So far Sony is the only supplier of Apple CMOS sensors, which represents a very worrying situation for the Cupertino company.

According to Morgan Stanley Jasmine Lu: " Sony plays an important role, both for the CMOS sensor and for the camera module of the upcoming iPhone 7. " He also added that “For the moment, the performance rate for the modules has been low. The risks are increasing to a possible delay in start-up if Sony does not resume normal operations any time soon.

Apple has tried to increase its number of component suppliers, due to the risks that have affected its supply chain lately, however, in the case of the CMOS sensor, Sony is the only supplier.

Sony is expected to disclose the damage it received to its production equipment, if this is the case.

It should be noted that this is not the first time that earthquakes have affected the production of the iPhone 7. Recently, in the month of February, the chip maker TSMC A10 had damage to one of its factories in southern Taiwan after an earthquake.

So until now, it only remains to be patient and hope that production is not affected again by any external factor and does not have more delays for the manufacture of the long-awaited new generation device.
