The Square Enix development team has officially released its December 2018 update for Final Fantasy XV, adding the new DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) anti-aliasing method. It is an Nvidia-based anti-aliasing technology that used the power of Deep Learning algorithms to scale images to higher resolutions, providing an anti-aliasing effect while offering improved performance.

GeForce RTX 2080 Ti delivers over 60 stable 4K FPS in Final Fantasy XV with DLSS

Square Enix claims that this setting requires users to change their game's resolution to 4K, apparently making the feature unusable at lower resolutions. DLSS will only be available to users of Nvidia graphics cards with Turing technology. To use DLSS, users of RTX Turing graphics cards must download Nvidia's Game Ready 417.35 driver, or a newer version, which adds beta support for this technology.

Due to the deep learning nature of DLSS, Nvidia may update its AI algorithm in the future to improve its effectiveness. This means that the graphical impact of DLSS can improve over time, both in terms of quality and performance, as Nvidia trains more games on its network.

Below is a video from Nvidia that compared the performance of DLSS and TAA in 4K resolutions, although unfortunately Nvidia has decided to compare a GTX 1080 Ti with TAA to an RTX 2080 Ti with DLSS, presenting unmatched results. It would have been better to also see an RTX 2080 Ti with DLSS off / TAA activated. According to Nvidia, this enables 4K and 60FPS gaming at maximum settings.

DLSS is one of Turing's most promising technologies, it will be interesting to see how it improves performance as more games add compatibility.
