After knowing the reference models of Nvidia, it is time for the custom models of the main manufacturers of graphics cards, and today we have this Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC 8 GB.

The new Nvidia update elevates the performance of each GPU to a notch above, so the 2070 Super are now like the previous 2080. Gigabyte has followed a continuist design with a WINDFORCE 3X heatsink with RGB Fusion and an overclocking of 1815 MHz to go a step further in performance and especially in temperatures.

If you are interested in expanding your PC, do not miss our review of this 2070 Super because it is one of the best in power / price.

And before proceeding, we thank Gigabyte for their trust in us by lending us this GPU for analysis.

Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC 8 GB technical characteristics

Unboxing

You can already be in one more Unboxing, July is being a crazy month with the launch of the new Ryzen, the X570 motherboards and now also the GPUs from Nvidia and AMD. Computer lovers are in luck to spend everything saved during the year.

Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC 8 GB has come to us in the usual presentation that the brand makes with its graphics cards, consisting of a cardboard box completely full of color on all its faces. A combination of the brand's typical orange has been used together with the distinctive green of the Nvidia and the large mechanical eye staring at us on the main face. Behind we will have extra information about the product, especially its custom heatsink.

The GPU is in a lying position inside this case and perfectly protected by the typical polyethylene foam molds used in particularly sensitive and high-cost products.

In the bundle we will not find any type of cable that accompanies the main product, only the user guide and some elements in the form of cards with information and obviously the almost useless DVD with the drivers and software. An NVLink cable for a possible multi GPU setup would have been interesting and differential.

Although we want to refer to the Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Windforce which was the one intended for this analysis but due to last minute logistical problems they sent us the top model. We leave you an image so you can see that they are almost traced.

Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC 8GB exterior design

Manufacturers know that the graphics card market is always one of the most active and sought after by gamers. An example of this is the large number of cards that appear throughout the year, both reference models and models with custom heatsink and factory overclocking, as in this example. And something that almost always stands out in Gigabyte is that it is a manufacturer that offers us its higher performance designs at more affordable prices than the competition.

And speaking of design, this Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC 8 GB inevitably follows a continuous line with respect to configurations such as the previous RTX 2070 or 2080. We are talking about the high-performance heatsink WINDFORCE 3X, which has a configuration of three fans as a reference in the brand.

But before we get to them, we have a casing made of hard plastic of good thickness and quality, as we are always used to, and in almost entirely matt black. In it, the pronounced edges predominate in both the lateral and upper areas with white elements that eye, do not include LED lighting.

The measurements of this card are 286.5 mm long, 114.5 mm wide and 50.2 mm high. Surely in the photos it seems larger, but in the end we are facing a card less than 300 mm long, so it will not be a problem for most of the chassis on the market. Of course, you must ensure enough space in your expansion slots, because it will be occupying two and a half slots.

Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC 8 GB then features a triple fan configuration with its 82mm diameter WINDFORCE 3X. With a blade design completely studied and optimized to be efficient as well as silent, thanks to the splines placed on the 11 propellers we have on each one. In this case, we do have an alternate rotation mode of operation, where the central fan rotates in the opposite direction to the exterior ones in order not to generate turbulence and allow an optimized air flow downwards.

Gigabyte also uses Active Fan 3D technology to manage the system using a PWM signal and keep all three fans turned off as long as the GPU does not rise above 60 ° C, thus improving noise impact. Under these fans, we have two aluminum blocks connected by 6 copper heatpipes that offer the best heat dissipation we can find. We must take into account that the fans are not independently manageable, but they are all connected to the same header.

Placing us now in the lateral areas, the plastic housing is kept to cover part of the aluminum heatsink, although it is still quite visible, something necessary for the expulsion of hot air. In the visible area for the user, we have the brand's logo with LED lighting with RGB Fusion technology. Thanks to RGB Fusion software we can customize the entire card system or synchronize it with other Gigabyte products that we have.

And now we go to see the upper area, because Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC 8 GB has a large backplate and built in aluminum. It occupies the entire area of the PCB, and even a little more, being completely black and practically completely closed. We only see the mark of the brand in white and the screws that hold the entire dissipation system to the GPU. Gigabyte has wanted to make a product with a discreet design that is both elegant and super, and we believe that it has continued.

Ports and connections

Now let's move on to see all the connections that we find in this Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC 8 GB, be they video ports such as NVLink and connectors for fans. But of course, we must start with the most important, that of its rear panel:

  • 1x HDMI 2.0b3x DisplayPort 1.41x USB Type-C

No surprise in this regard, since we have exactly the same number and configuration of ports as in the reference model, as it should be. We say this because there are manufacturers that remove USB-C for no apparent reason. In this way a total of 4 high-resolution monitors are supported, where the DisplayPort connectors offer a maximum resolution of 8K @ 60 FPS and the HDMI 4K @ 60 FPS port, you will already know that.

The second most important connector is the power connector, of course, and in this case we have a total of two, being 8-pin and 6-pin respectively, meeting a TDP of 215W, so the manufacturer recommends a PSU of at minus 650W. In this model, the pin count has not been increased compared to the reference model, despite having an overclocking of about 54 MHz. These two connectors have a small LED indicator that shows if the power is reaching the GPU correctly.

Nor can we forget the presence of the NVLink connector to connect two identical GPUs in parallel and double track. It is a feature directly inherited from the RTX 2080, since, as you may know, this RTX 2070 Super has the same TU104 chip and practically the same PCB. The PCIe interface is version 3.0 x16, the same as always, it has not been uploaded to a 4.0 or anything like that, nor is it necessary yet.

And we finish the section with the connectors related to the fans and lighting. Pretty simple, since we only have one for each element, so all the fans will be managed as one, if we increase RPM, we will upload them all equally. We would have liked the manufacturer to make the leap to a somewhat more complete management of its fans separately, and thus give more freedom to the user.

Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC 8GB PCB, Interior and Hardware

Unlike the reference models, these models with a custom heatsink such as Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC 8 GB, are much easier to open, so we can see more closely the configuration of the PCB and how the cooling system is distributed.

Heatsink and PCB

As we already advanced almost at the beginning, we have a heatsink composed of two aluminum blocks and a high finning density. The one that we consider main has a greater thickness, since it will be responsible for removing heat from the graphics processor thanks to a configuration of 6 bare copper heatpipes that make direct contact with the chip using white thermal paste. Around it we find an aluminum plate with several silicone thermal pads that are responsible for collecting the heat from the 8 GDDR6 memory chips and transferring them to this main block.

On a separate level, we have the second block, a little thinner and with a solid aluminum plate with thermal pads that are responsible for cooling the entire area of the VRM, both MOSFETs and condensers and CHOKES. Gigabyte has left nothing of the essentials without its dose of heatsink, and we like that a lot in the face of possible overclockings.

As far as PCB is concerned, Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC 8 GB has a custom design in which an 8 + 2 phase power configuration has been chosen for your VRM. Remember that the reference model has 7 + 2 phases. In addition, the components used are of the highest quality, with solid capacitors and more durable metal chokes.

GPU Features

In this regard, we have no great news regarding reference models or direct competition. Manufacturers only touch the GPU frequency on their models or, as we have seen, they improve VRM and temperatures.

And we go a little into the details of the Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC 8 GB chipset, which is a variant of the TU104 that has been installed so far in the RTX 2080 models, although a little cut in cores and frequency. Gigabyte has chosen to give a little more twist to the reference configuration with a clock frequency of 1605 MHz as the base frequency and 1815 MHz in boost mode, which are 45 MHz more than the Nvidia Super and 45 MHz less than the RTX 2080 for example. Recall that there are a total of 2560 CUDA Cores, 320 Tensor and 40 RT to give 64 ROPs (rendering units) and 184 TMUs (texturing units) of performance. The cache memory has been increased to 2560 KB in L1 and 4096 in L2, so that Ray Tracing and DLSS work perfectly.

The memory configuration has remained the same as the RTX 2080, with 8 GB GDDR6 working at 14 Gbps with an effective frequency of 7000 MHz, which certainly allow a great overclocking as has already been seen in other reviews. We have a 256-bit bus at a speed of no less than 448 GB / s, although the PCIe 3.0 bus has been maintained, more than enough for current graphics cards.

On paper, this GPU should give us optimal performance in 1080p and 2K resolutions with over 100 FPS and over 50 FPS in most games in 4K resolutions. The main question will be how much improvement compared to the reference model we are talking about, and how will its overclocking capacity be, since it seems that these Super come with the processor to the maximum already standard.

Test bench and performance test

As usual, we are going to perform the entire battery of performance tests both synthetic and in real games, to this Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC 8 GB in search of its performance. Our test bench consists of the following elements:

All the synthetic tests and tests have been carried out with the filters as they come in the configuration of each program. The tests consist of tests that run in various resolutions, such as Full HD and 4K. We have run all of them on the Windows 10 Pro operating system in its 1903 version with the latest Nvidia drivers for this graphics card (they have provided us with new ones before launching them for sale).

What do we look for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. Benchmark scores will help us compare this GPU to the competition. To slightly differentiate the quality, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS based on the quantity we get in each game and resolution.

FRAMES PER SECOND
Frames Per Second (FPS) Gameplay
Less than 30 FPS Limited
30 ~ 40 FPS Playable
40 ~ 60 FPS Good
Greater than 60 FPS Fairly good or Excellent

Benchmarks

The first round of tests will consist of carrying out a series of synthetic tests in which a score will be produced that can be compared on equal terms with other GPU models.

For benchmark tests we will use the following titles:

  • 3DMark Fire Strike normal3DMark Fire Strike UltraTime SpyVRMARK

Game testing

The tests will be carried out at the three most used resolutions in games, we refer to Full HD (1920 x 1080p), QHD or 2K (2560 x 1440p) and UHD or 4K (3840 x 2160p). In this way, we will have a complete range of results to be able to compare them with other GPUs. For each of the games, we have kept the automatic settings selected in each and for each resolution. These settings are as follows:

  • Final Fantasy XV, standard, TAA, DirectX 12DOOM, Ultra, TAA, VulkanDeus EX Mankind Divided, Alto, Anisotropico x4, DirectX 11Far Cry 5, Alto, TAA, DirectX 12Metro Exodus, Alto, Anisotropico x16, DirectX 12 (without RT) Shadow of the Tomb Rider, Alto, TAA + Anisotropic x4, DirectX 12

Overclocking to the Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC 8 GB

At the overclocking level we have been able to give it a little tug on the memories (+1000 MHz) and in the core up to + 100 MHz. As standard it runs up to 1940 MHz, with this improvement we have reached ~ 2040 MHz. benchmark we see a great improvement, but what about Games? We have chosen DEUS EX to test the total gain in FPS.

Deus Ex Mankind Divided Stock @ Overclock
1920 x 1080 (Full HD) 126 FPS 131 FPS
2560 x 1440 (WQHD) 90 FPS 94 FPS
3840 x 2160 (4K) 48 FPS 52 FPS

software

Aorus Engine allows us to overclock and monitor our graphics card. Although the application is quite good, it still lacks a little dot to keep up with the competition. I particularly like other applications for these purposes, be it EVGA Precision or MSI Afterburner. But it's nice to know that Gigabyte has its own.

But I do find it interesting that you install the AORUS RGB application to configure the lighting with the other Aorus components and peripherals. Although, as you already know, in this model we only have an LED area (in the logo). You can install, configure and then uninstall it. So you save useless consumption in Windows?

Temperatures and consumption

Regarding temperatures, we are very happy with the results obtained with the new Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC 8 GB. We have obtained 43 ºC in idle, we have to remember that it is a GPU that in low load does not activate the fans and that when we make intensive use of the graphics card they activate. Once active at maximum power, we have not seen it rise from 64 ºC on average.

We also leave you a picture after 6 hours of operation with Furmark running. As we can see the temperatures are great. The great work done by the Gigabyte heatsink and the new fans is great.

Regarding consumption, we have 74W at rest and 300W at maximum GPU load. When we stress the processor the consumption rises to 418W. Giving us enough margin when buying a good power supply, with one of 550 or 600W we are well served.

Final words and conclusion about Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC 8 GB

The Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC 8 GB arrives on the market with one of the best Gigabyte heatsinks, the Windforce X3, a very healthy PCB and a set that ensures great stability.

In our tests we have been able to verify that it has enough power to enjoy playing in Full HD and 2K, and if you are not very demanding… play very good titles in 4K without very high details.

Remember that this RTX 2070 Super is a normal RTX 2080 slightly "cropped". Which assures us a good performance, and in case we need more, we can mount an NVLink (With double consumption, worse temperatures than the best MONOGPU). Regarding overclocking, it allows us to give you an extra and in the best case we can go from 3 to 5 FPS. It's not bad at all!

We recommend reading the best graphics cards on the market

Regarding the temperatures and consumption, the values obtained seem remarkable to us. At rest the graphic is excessively silent (without coil whine) because the fans do not start and at full load they are hardly heard. A great success the good heatsink that Gigabyte has mounted.

The Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC 8 GB will have a recommended price of 577 euros, while the Super Windforce model will have a RRP of 536 euros and the RTX 2060 SUPER of 429 euros. We are in front of one of the most interesting options and with one of the lowest prices on the market. What do you think of this beast? Do you think they are worth it? We want to know your opinion!
