Nvidia returns to the charge, because we already have in our facilities the new Nvidia RTX 2080 Super. The graphics card with the fastest memory on the market, no less than 15.5 Gbps for its 8 GB GDDR6 on a bus that remains at 256 bit. Its TU104 chipset based on the previous RTX 2080 has been pushed to the limit, with 3074 CUDA Cores and a frequency boost to deliver 6-10% better performance than its predecessor.
Will this new Nvidia beast live up to expectations? The time has come to see if these modifications have taken effect with our full test bench.
But first, we must thank Nvidia for giving us their GPU so soon to be ready on the day of its official presentation.
Nvidia RTX 2080 Super technical features
Unboxing
As far as the Unboxing of Nvidia RTX 2080 Super is concerned, we do not have too many news regarding the previously tested reference models. This means that this wonder comes in a rather small and narrow rigid and solid cardboard box. As is the tradition at Nvidia, this box offers a vertical opening and a look that we already know from the other Super, based on gray stripes simulating metal and the color green for everything else.
So we are going to open the box by removing the two side stickers and then we will find a beautiful graphics card placed vertically and perfectly accommodated in a high-density polyethylene foam mold to avoid shocks. In addition, it comes inside a small plastic to protect it from chafing.
The bundle that the user will find when they buy it, has the following elements.
- Nvidia RTX 2080 Super Thick Graphics Card Instruction Manual DisplayPort to DVI DL Adapter Cable Product Warranty Card
As it could not be otherwise, we have only what is necessary and fair, we must save friends. In any case it is the general trend in the presentations of graphic cards, without NVLink bridges or anything similar included. But hey, at least we do have the DVI adapter.
Exterior design
From now on many will say "this should have been the RTX 2080 that came out in its day." Now it is easy to say it, but almost a year ago we had it as the maximum expression in terms of graphic performance, while now, it is still top with the permission of the Ti version, but we are more used to it. In any case, Nvidia has decided to give the Turing architecture a twist or two by raising a chipset step in both models already on the market and raising the level in the TU104 for this Nvidia RTX 2080 Super.
The manufacturer is happy with the important work of updating and designing its reference models, so much so that it has kept its heatsink and external structure unchanged. In my opinion, the design of this card is a delight, with the finesse and robustness that gives an aluminum heatsink and casing and a double fan configuration with much better performance than any blower we find, and I do not want to point out.
In fact, we have exactly the same measurements as the RTX 2070 Super, that is, 270 mm long by 100 mm wide and 39 mm thick, millimeter up or down. If, if they put the two models together and remove their central screen printing, it would be quite difficult to differentiate one from the other. Precisely in this central area, between the two fans, we have a chrome plate with the screen-printed model that gives it that Premium finish that distinguishes this new family of GPUs, precious for my taste.
But of course, the most important thing will be its cooling with this past chipset of turns. A dual fan configuration with a diameter of 85mm on each. These two fans will be exactly the same as those used in the other models, with a total of 13 blades in a flat design and a really silent dual- axis bearing core that works like a charm as we will see later in the temperature tests.
And once again, we must inform that these two fans will never be stopped, since it does not implement a Zero RPM system or whatever we want to call it. In fact, they'll both be running at around 1500 RPM steadily until we subject her to stress, whose PWM system will boost her spin to the required RPM. We think that in this Nvidia RTX 2080 Super, it would be very necessary to have a heatsink of this type of technology, simply because it is the clear trend.
The housing that covers this entire cooling system and fans is an aluminum block with the color and natural texture of the metal. Its corners are gently curved downwards to keep the entire front covered and revealing only two holes for fixing plates.
Similarly, the sides have a two-step system, it can be said that they are also made of aluminum and black plastic in the central part on the inside and with the "GeForce" logo on the outside that will light up in green. fixed. In this last face, we have the NVLink connector very well covered by a plastic and rubber protector, so the GPUs compatible with multiGPU increase in number friends. Of course, then prepare your pocket.
And we finish this exterior review by flipping the Nvidia RTX 2080 Super over to see its full backplate of the upper zone. It is also made of aluminum with its natural color, and has exactly the same decoration as the rest of RTX, some lines in the central part with rectangular grooves and its distinctive in the central part. Also here are almost all the screws that we must remove to remove the heatsink, one that is damned well fastened in these reference models.
Ports and power connections
As far as ports are concerned, we are going to have exactly the same configuration as the RTX 2070 Super, and consequently the previous RTX 2080, which is an eye, the latter will be discontinued due to this update of Nvidia RTX 2080 Super. These connectors are:
- 1x HDMI 2.0b3x DisplayPort 1.41x USB Type-C
It thus supports a total of four monitors at 4K resolution, since the three Display Ports support a maximum resolution of 8K at 60 FPS and of course 4K, while the HDMI port supports 4K resolutions at 60 FPS. And on this GPU, 2K and 4K resolution will almost be the favorite, and the main reason to buy, because we will get FPS rates close to and above 60 in 4K and more than 100 FPS in 2K resolution (depending on the quality chosen graph).
USB Type-C is also maintained, which we are not going to talk about because practically everyone knows that it can be used almost like another USB on our PC. Yes it is interesting the fact that it has increased the TDP of the GPU to 250W compared to 215W that the normal RTX 2080 had. We have uploaded processor and memory frequency, so it is perfectly normal, we will even need that extra so that we can do even more overclocking. For its power, an 8-pin PCIe and a 6-pin connector has been used, more than enough for what we have in hand.
Nvidia RTX 2080 Super PCB and Hardware
We are going to extend all the information available about the technical specifications and benefits of this new Nvidia RTX 2080 Super, for that we are in your review. But this time we are not going to open this GPU either, since it is difficult to do so and we are not going to have anything new. We already anticipate that it has 7 + 2 power phases like the previous model and the RTX 2070, it is something that does not surprise us.
The chipset it assembles is the 12nm FinFET TU104, just the one used in the previous 2080, although with certain modifications at the hardware level and optimization to improve performance. In this way it is capable of reaching a frequency of 1650 MHz in base mode and 1815 MHz in turbo mode since they are 100 MHz more than the previous version. But the core count has also varied, reaching 3072 CUDA Cores, 384 Tensor Cores and 48 RT Cores, compared to 2944, 368 and 48 in the 2080 version. In the same way, the L1 cache of the processor has been increased. until reaching 3072 KB, while L2 remains at 4096 KB.
With these numbers, the Nvidia RTX 2080 Super can reach 192 Texture Units (TMUs) and 64 Raster Units (ROPs). The figures of its processor show the 348.5 GT / s in texture rate, 11.2 TFLOPS FP32 (floating point operations), 89 TFLOPS (in matrix operations) and finally 8 Giga Rays in its ability to do Ray Tracing in real time. We will see later how this translates into performance in games and benchamrks, because especially in ray tracing we have significant improvements in the registers.
On the part of the GDDR6 memory, the 8 GB and its 256-bit bus have been maintained, since the next step was to increase that of the GPU 2080 Ti, but this fact would have completely changed the architecture. In any case, we have what are, today, the fastest VRAM memories, since their clock frequency has been increased to 7751 MHz, thus achieving speeds of 15.5 Gbps of stock and a bandwidth of 496 GB / s. It is true that, through overclocking, we could reach these frequencies without problems, but now it is implemented at the factory, and our overclocking will start from there, being able to go beyond 8000 MHz clock without any problem.
Test bench and synthetic tests
After seeing the theory, we are going to see the practice, analyzing all the test battery that we are going to perform on this Nvidia RTX 2080 Super. Our test bench is made up of the following elements:

All the synthetic tests and tests have been carried out with the filters as they come in the configuration of each program. The tests consist of tests that run in various resolutions, such as Full HD and 4K, and also to test performance in Ray Tracing in the case of the Port Royal test. We have run all of them on the Windows 10 Pro operating system in its 1903 version with the latest version drivers available for this graphics card. Nvidia has provided us with new ones before they are released for sale, which are version 431.56.
What are we looking for in these tests?
First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To slightly differentiate the quality, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS based on the quantity we get in each game and resolution.
FRAMES PER SECOND | |
Frames Per Second (FPS) | Gameplay |
Less than 30 FPS | Limited |
30 ~ 40 FPS | Playable |
40 ~ 60 FPS | Good |

Benchmarks and synthetic tests
- 3DMark Fire Strike normal3DMark Fire Strike UltraTime SpyPort Royal (RT) VRMARK Orange Room
What we expected we have, and that is that this graphics card surpasses its previous model, although it is true that in some things we have a score very close to it and even internal. We must bear in mind that it is not exactly the same test bench from a year ago, since the 9900K is another silicon and the drivers are also different. In any case, the superiority of the 3DMark tests is evident.
Game testing
After synthetic tests, we will proceed to evaluate the real performance in games, thus having a closer guide of what our GPU will be able to deliver under DirectX 11, 12 and OPEN GL.
The tests will be carried out at the three most used resolutions in gaming, we refer to Full HD (1920 x 1080p), QHD or 2K (2560 x 1440p) and UHD or 4K (3840 x 2160p). In this way, we will have a complete range of results to be able to compare them with other GPUs. For each of the games, we have kept the automatic settings selected in each one and for each resolution so that we can buy it with the rest of the GPU that we have analyzed.
- Shadow of the Tomb Rider, Alto, TAA + Anisotropic x4, DirectX 12 (with and without DLSS) Far Cry 5, Alto, TAA, DirectX 12 DOOM, Ultra, TAA, Open GL 4.5 Final Fantasy XV, standard, TAA, DirectX 12 Deus EX Mankind Divided, High, Anisotropic x4, DirectX 11 Metro Exodus, High, Anisotropic x16, DirectX 12 (with and without RT)
In this battery of results we also see just what we expected, a graphics card that is at the head of performance in the three main resolutions, except for the occasional case. Recall that in DOOM the RX 5700 are above because they were tested with Vulkan to avoid the embarrassing results in Open GL.
We have then some FPS that in almost all the titles exceed 100 in 2K resolution and 50 in 4K resolution with the graphics set high, let's not forget. Similarly, in 1080p we have records around the 144 Hz of gaming screens, being the highest in the ranking.
Gaming performance with DLSS and Ray Tracing enabled
As on the other occasions, we have chosen to see how the performance of the Nvidia RTX 2080 Super will be with the RTX options activated. Specifically DLSS in Shadow of the Tomb Rider and DLSS + RT IN Metro Exodus in high quality.
1920 x 1080 (Full HD) | 2560 x 1440 (WQHD) | 3840 x 2160 (4K) | |
Metro Exodus (without RTX) | 97 FPS | 74 FPS | 46 FPS |
Exodus meter (with RT + DLSS) | 75 FPS | 64 FPS | 46 FPS |
Shadow of the Tomb Rider (without RTX) | 130 FPS | 106 FPS | 60 FPS |
Shadow of the Tomb Rider (with DLSS) | 129 FPS | 112 FPS | 77 FPS |
You already know that DLSS is only worth it in 2K and 4K resolution, and this is seen not only in this RTX 2080 Super, but also in the other graphics cards that support this technology.
Overclocking
Remember that overclock or manipulation carries a risk, we and any manufacturer are not responsible for improper use, use your head and always do so at your own risk.
Shadow of the Tomb Rider | Stock | @ Overclock |
1920 x 1080 (Full HD) | 130 FPS | 132 FPS |
2560 x 1440 (WQHD) | 106 FPS | 111 FPS |
3840 x 2160 (4K) | 60 FPS | 64 FPS |
3DMark Fire Strike | Stock | @ Overclock |
Graphics Score | 28, 911 | 30, 359 |
Physics Score | 25, 085 | 25, 017 |
Combined | 24, 432 | 25, 052 |
The overclocking capacity is practically the same as we have in the other reference models, allowing us an increase of about 120 MHz in the GPU in a stable way and between 700 and 800 MHz in the GDDR6 memories with improvements in performance. It is true that in the latter case we can increase even more, but improvements in FPS are not reflected beyond the capture that I leave you with EVGA Precision X1.
In addition, we can see that the temperature will be very good if we also increase the RPM of the fans, although I already warned that it is not necessary to do so. The RTX 2080 Super withstands temperatures of up to 89 ° C in stock without throttling, which is not bad.
With our overclocking we have reached frequencies of up to 2000 MHz in the core and 8450 MHz in the memories, obtaining interesting improvements especially in 2K and 4K, and quite little in 1080p for the game we have tested. Remember that each GPU will have a certain capacity and performance, you know, the silicon lottery.
Temperature and consumption
In addition to measuring both its temperature with the HWiNFO program by stressing the GPU with FurMark, we have also simultaneously measured the power consumption of the entire equipment. And while we were doing it, we have taken a few thermal captures with the card at full capacity for a long time with an ambient temperature of around 24 ° C.
One of the benefits of having the fan system always running is that the idle temperatures are spectacular, as in almost all reference models. In addition, as we have said, this RTX supports no less than 89 ° C up to the limit of the thermal threshold which is much more than the 70 of the other RTXs. The fans offer exactly the same performance as the lower models, with maximum RPM of 2175 with the stock performance profile. Being able to go up to 3700 RPM maximum.
Similarly, while we have subjected it to you are continued, we have experienced lower consumption than the base RTX 2080. It is quite significant, since this Super has a TDP of 250W compared to the 215W of the RTX 2080. In any case, this is the result shown, and if we stress the entire test bench, we will get 380W.
Final words and conclusion about Nvidia RTX 2080 Super
Our benchmark has stayed pretty much the same, and this Nvidia RTX 2080 Super continues to lead the way in gaming performance graphics cards. This is what it is made for. A GPU that in terms of design is exactly the same as the other Super.
It is based on a TU104 SoC but with the nuts well tightened. Going up to 1850 MHz in stock and no less than 15.5 Gbps in its 8 GB of GDDR6 memory. In this way it has proven to be that 6 to 10% more powerful than the previous RTX 2080. It is practically number 1 in all three resolutions and in tested games. Although its playground is 2K and 4K.
We recommend our guide to the best graphics cards on the market
A dual-fan aluminum heatsink is more than enough to keep temperatures at bay even in overclocking. This GPU supports up to 89 ° C without throttling and an increase of about 120 MHz in Core and 800 MHz in VRAM under overclocking, which is not bad. Of course, its fans will never turn off as it happens in models with custom heatsink.
The truth is that we can not put too many objections to the creation, or rather, Nvidia's update of one of its flagships. This Nvidia RTX 2080 Super card will appear on the market with a RRP of 749 euros for the reference version on July 23, 2019. So fans will have to break the piggy bank and they want to have this Super GPU in their hands. In fact this model comes with a pack from the Get Control and Wolfenstein: Younblood games which is not bad at all.
