Gnome 3.24 will be available on ubuntu 17.04

As GNOME 3.24 is slated for release in March, this will mark the first time in a long time that an Ubuntu version comes with the latest stable version of GNOME.

GNOME 3.24 adds to Ubuntu 17.04

Ubuntu 17.04 will of course continue to use the Unity desktop, but GNOME 3.24 will be an alternative from the start.

The next beta version of Ubuntu GNOME 17.04 will have GNOME 3.24 Beta 1 (v3.23.90) and by default the latest GNOME Shell desktop.

The bulk of GNOME 3.24, but not everything

There are a few things to clarify here: Not all GNOME 3.24 applications will be available.

The latest version of many basic GNOME applications will be out, including the GNOME Calendar (with a pending update), Totem (also known as videos), and GNOME Disks. Others will be in previous versions because there are no updates available (for example, GNOME Weather), or Ubuntu opts.

One of the most interesting new features of GNOME 3.24 will be Night Light, which will automatically adjust the screen brightness according to the time of day, this in order to reduce eye fatigue.

To get the entire GNOME stack updated for Ubuntu, the user will have to install the GNOME3 or GNOME3 Staging PPA as they see fit.
