Google doesn't want to lag behind virtual reality technology. This year we had the official launches of Oculus Rift and HTC Vive (in addition to PSVR on Playstation 4) and Google wants to take advantage of this technology to implement it in its products.

Virtual reality will hit Chrome in early 2017

During a W3C and Virtual Reality event, Megan Lindsay, Product Manager at Google WebVR, announced that Google will implement virtual reality in the Google Chrome browser early next year.

Google's plan is to implement WebVR in all stable versions of Google Chrome, for Android PCs and mobiles. The WebVR API is still in the early stages of development, but it is functional in some versions of Mozilla Firefox and Chrome that are not widely used. The goal is for Internet browsing in a virtual environment to reach the mass public during 2017.

Google is also working on a new functionality called VR Shell, which will allow browsing 2D websites in a virtual reality environment. VR Shell would bequeath first to the Android version of Google Chrome in mid-2017 and a time later for the computer version.

Google would not be the only one that wants to implement WebVR in its browser, also the people of Microsoft, who last month commented that it was working on this API so that it arrives as soon as possible to Microsoft Edge, its new browser in Windows 10.
