HP has announced a new high-end consumer NVMe SSD drive, the HP EX950. This new HP drive would become the successor to the HP EX920, which for most of 2018 was one of the most affordable high-end NVMe SSDs on the market.

HP EX950 uses the new SM2262EN controller and increases its capacity to 2TB

One of the first major innovations is that the EX950 replaces the EX920's Silicon Motion SM2262 controller with the new SM2262EN controller, bringing performance improvements to remain competitive in 2019.

The EX950 uses the same Intel / Micron 64-layer TLC 3D NAND technology as the EX920, so all performance improvements are the result of driver and firmware optimization. The most significant improvements claimed are write speeds, with the 1TB model having 60% more sequential write performance and almost 50% more random write.

The 1TB and 2TB models have slightly more capacity than the EX920 (1024GB usable instead of 1000GB), which should also help a bit to maintain write speeds. Sequential read performance improves from 3.2 GB / s to 3.5 GB / s, further pushing the limits of a 3 x4 PCIe host connection.

The EX950 line increases capacities, having a model that reaches 2 TB with read speeds that reach 3500 MB / s and write speeds of up to 2900 MB / s.

HP has yet to announce when the EX950 will hit shelves or what the prices will be like, but we sense they should be announced soon. This new series of HP SSDs should be directly competing with the ADATA SX8200 Pro, which uses the same driver.
