Transcend mte820 and jetdrive 820, two new tlc memory-based m.2 drives
Table of contents:
Transcend has announced the launch of two new M.2 drives based on TLC memory technology to offer the best balance between price and performance. First we have the Transcend MTE820 designed for PC and secondly the JetDrive 820 which is designed for Mac.
Transcend MTE820 and JetDrive 820
The Transcend MTE820 is based on the same controller as the MTE850 that the company released in May, the difference being that it features 3D TLC NAND flash memory instead of 3D MLC NAND. At the heart of this unit is the Silicon Motion SM2260 controller. Built in the M.2-2280 form factor, the unit takes advantage of the M.2 32 Gb / s interface and NVMe 1.2 protocol to deliver sequential transfer rates of up to 1, 760 MB / s read and up to 860 MB / s in writing. It is available in capacities of 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB.
SSD drives with TLC vs MLC memories
As for the Transcend JetDrive 820, designed to work on Mac computers released after the end of 2013, the unit has a PCI-Express 3.0 x2 interface for Apple computers and is offered in 240GB, 480GB and 960 capacities. GB. It is based on the same combination of controllers and memory as the MTE820 and thanks to its host interface it offers sequential transfer speeds of up to 950 MB / s on Macs with PCIe 3.0 NGFF slots.
On older Macs with gen 2.0 slots, it offers up to 700MB / s read and up to 650MB / s write.
