Gaming laptops are hitting hard and the HP Omen 15 that NVIDIA has sent us is the owner of the three B's: good, beautiful and cheap. It comes equipped with an Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, an Nvidia GTX 1060 MAX-Q graphics card, 8GB of RAM, a 128GB NVME SSD, and a 1TB hard drive. And beware, the screen is TN but runs at 120 Hz and Nvidia's G-Sync technology. The price? It will surprise you!

Ready to see our analysis? Do not miss it!

First of all, we thank Nvidia for the trust placed in ceding the product to us for analysis.

HP Omen 15 technical characteristics

Unboxing and design

The HP Omen 15 is perfectly protected in a full-color cardboard box. With a premium design, where the corporate colors of the HP OMEN gaming series stand out: red and black.

Once we open the box we find two sections inside. In the first we have the laptop well protected with two pieces of foam to prevent it from moving during transport.

While in the second box, we will find the charger, an HP OMEN sticker and the power cable. We are facing a presentation of an excellent product that will make us enjoy for many years.

HP Omen 15 is a notebook with dimensions of 38.85 x 27.55 x 2.48 cm and weight of 2.62 kg . If you come from an Ultrabook laptop as it is in my case, it will be great, but if it is your first laptop you will see that it overflows with a lot of quality.

Aesthetically the HP Omen 15 has a very aggressive design. We still have the colors of the gaming series: red + black and a large logo on the top of the laptop. They have taken care of all the details!

We are ahead of last year's version, as we saw during Gamescom, the HP guys showed us the new 2018 version, which has improved some details at an aesthetic level that we loved.

The rear area is completely clean of connectors, while both sides are well loaded with connectors. We detail it for you:

  • 1 x Thunderbolt 33 x USB 3.1 Gen 11 x HDMI1 x Mini displayport1 x RJ-451 x Headphone / Microphone combo1 x Multi-format SD card reader1 x Power connector

We consider the incorporation of a Thunderbolt 3 connector a total success . This connection provides us with a data transfer rate of up to 40 GB / s. This will be great for us if we want to install an external graphics card (eGPU) in the future.

At the bottom are the four rubber feet to prevent it from moving and a grid to improve ventilation of the equipment.

Screen to compete at the highest level

HP surprises us with a 15.6-inch screen and TN panel. We did not like the fairly thick bezels. As expected in the upper area, HP has integrated the webcam with HD resolution and Wide Vision technology with a dual matrix digital microphone.

This screen reaches a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, which allows it to offer great image definition in its size. HP has used a TN-type panel at a 120Hz refresh rate to offer the best fluency in the most demanding and competitive games like CS: GO. We have been very surprised that it incorporates Nvidia's G-Sync technology, which will sublimely dampen the FPS drops, improving the gaming experience and having a certain advantage over our rivals. How about? Surprised?

We lack an IPS screen, losing viewing angles and color fidelity. But we gain better refreshment, the G-Sync technology, making it ideal for competing in e-sports.

Most prominent internal components

After seeing a very aggressive design and an ideal screen to play. It is time to detail the most important internal components that the HP Omen 15 incorporates. We came across a quad- core Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor at a frequency of 2.8 GHz, which with the maximum turbo goes up to 3.8 GHz, complemented by 6 MB of L3 cache, 45 W of TDP and compatibility up to 64 GB of memory RAM (the board limits 32 GB).

Perhaps one of its weakest points is the installation of only 8 GB of 2400 Mhz DDR4 SO-DIMM RAM. Although they come in Dual Channel (two 4 GB modules), we believe that to play in 2018 it should have at least 16 GB. But beware, we forgive it, for its good price.

About storage HP has opted for a 128 GB SSD disk drive in M.2 NVMe format signed by Samsung with very good read and write. This is complemented by a 1TB 2.5-inch format data hard drive. This combination is very good for installing the most important operating system and applications on the SSD. While the mechanical hard drive for games and personal data.

The HP OMEN 15 does not have Windows 10 installed. We must purchase a license and install it manually.

The graphics section has the competent Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card with a total of 1280 CUDA Cores accompanied by 6 GB of GDDR5 memory with a 192-bit interface. With these specifications we can play any game in 1920 x 1080p resolution (the native of the screen) in high.

Finally, we would like to remind you that Nvidia GeForce GTX graphics cards with Max-Q format produce less heat and allow greater design flexibility. Although in this case, it is a laptop with a high profile, which are all benefits.

A backlit membrane keyboard

HP decides to integrate a backlit membrane keyboard. As positive points it has a very quiet profile and a quite pleasant route. HP highlights the AWSD gamer keys with the name "Dragon RED" which incorporates 26-key key-rollover and independent macros.

Although if you are used to higher quality keyboards, you will quickly notice that the experience is good, but not fantastic. If you want we can disable the lighting using the Function key?

The Trackpad is pretty good and incorporates two dedicated buttons for left and right clicking. It allows us to make gestures and we see it quite remarkable. Good job from the HP guys!

Improved sound

The HP Omen 15 includes four speakers that support Bang & Olufsen sound technology and HP Audio Boost. After doing a lot of tests playing, listening to music and some series, we can come to the conclusion that it offers very well-powered bass and very clear audio. Are they the best we've tried? They are not, but it stands out from the average of the notebooks that we normally test and it is very difficult to find it for this price.

Performance and storage tests

First we are going to see the speed of the SSD disk of this HP OMEN 15, for this we have used the popular program CristalDiskMark in its latest version, this has been the result obtained.

We have also passed the following benchmarks to test the performance it offers us:

  • AIDA64Cinebench R153DMARK Fire Strike3DMARK Time SpyPCMARK 8

We now turn to see the behavior of the team in the most demanding games, all of which have been executed with the graphics at maximum and in 1080p resolution, the tests have been done with the FRAPS benchmarking tool for 180 seconds, it has been repeated three times and an average has been made.

The graphic adjustments have been as follows:

  • Rise Of Tomb RaiderFar Cry 5Doom 4Final Fantasy XVDEUS EX: Mankind

At the gaming performance level we hardly noticed the difference in performance compared to the all-powerful Gigabyte Aero 15 that has an Intel Core i7-8750H processor and a 6 GB Nvidia GTX 1060 graphics card. The biggest disadvantage, we will have it against applications that take full advantage of the processor or streaming, but in this case the difference is hardly noticeable.

Temperatures and consumption

The temperatures that the laptop has are totally normal. It is usually kept at 46 ºC on average at rest and at maximum performance reaches stable at 89 ºC on average. We have seen peaks at 99 ºC and obviously we are already starting to see throttling in the processor. But this happens to most gaming laptops.

Regarding consumption, we have 25 W at rest and an average load of 124 W. We have noted a peak of 154 W, so we have a consumption above the average of other notebooks with the same characteristics. If we play without being connected to the laptop it does not last much more than an hour, while if we use Wi-Fi, minimum brightness (the TN panel and its nits do not give a very good experience) and we navigate we can last about 4 hours.

Final words and conclusion about HP OMEN 15

HP has done a great job with the HP OMEN 15-CE083NS, it is a 15.6-inch gaming laptop with a 120 Hz TN panel and G-Sync technology. Internally, it has an Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, a 6 GB Nvidia GTX 1060 graphics card, a 128 GB NVME SSD combo and a 1 TB hard drive.

In our gaming tests it has been intractable playing triple A titles. We have reached more than 40 FPs in the most demanding games, and be careful, all with maximum filters. If we adjust filters and shadows we can get better averages. We have also tried other titles like Fortnite and PUBG with very good metrics + 60 FPS always.

It is also important to note that it has a Thunderbolt 3 connection to expand through an EGPU in the distant future. And four speakers signed by Bang & Olufsen that offer a very clear sound.

We recommend reading the best graphics cards on the market

Like all thick notebooks the temperatures are quite good. Although if we pass stress tests at 100% it reaches up to 90 ºC. Playing we have not exceeded 73 ºC, temperatures more than acceptable for a very good team. Obviously, at full capacity the team listens a little, but it was expected.

We have it on offer (limited units) in PCComponentes for 999 euros. We believe that it is an unbeatable price, and if you are not going to dedicate yourself to graphic design with it (for its TN panel), it is the best option that the market offers. What do you think of the HP Omen 15? Did you like it as much as we do?
