We really wanted to try HP OMEN 15 and it has finally reached us. A gaming laptop with Nvidia RTX 2060 and the best that the laptop market offers. Specifically, we are going to analyze the OMEM 15-dc1000ns, which has a 15.6-inch screen, Full HD and 144 Hz, Thunderbolt 3 and an Intel Core i7-8750H. And watch out, because its price is only 1600 euros than a whole RTX inside. What will you be able to offer us? We will see it soon in this complete analysis, so without further ado, let's go there!

First of all, we thank HP and Nvidia for the trust placed in us by transferring the product to us for the analysis.

HP OMEN 15 RTX 2060 technical features

Unboxing and design

It is not every day that you find laptops with an Nvidia RTX 2060 inside at only 1, 600 euros, and this is something that is already a huge advantage. HP has done an excellent job with the presentation, we have a large black printed hard cardboard box including a very nice color photo of the laptop.

In the box we only see make and model of the laptop. In the lateral areas is where we can find information about the specifications, although very basic, as well as the model code. In this case we are facing the HP OMEN 15 dc1000ns a really irresistible model, which we will see below.

We open the box and what do we find? Well above all order and good presentation. The main product is in a cardboard mold with a protector in the upper area and another one between the keyboard and the screen. On the side we find the charger of large dimensions and 200 W of power, and nothing else.

The exterior aspect certainly falls in love, very different from what we are used to and really original. The top cover that is the first thing we will see, is made of aluminum with incredible finishes. On the one hand, it combines a vertical area with brushed aluminum finishes and black color, and on the other a carbon mesh design in pure racing style.

In all of it we find a rough touch that does not slip anything and best of all, that leaves no trace whatsoever, so it is something that we practically do not have to worry about.

In the central area this HP OMEN 15 incorporates the OMEN logo in a very striking red color, along with four edges that divide the different areas also in the same color. Please note that these edges do not include LED lighting, or any part of the laptop's external finish.

After glimpsing its exterior, we are going to open it and take a closer look at its lines and design. The first thing that strikes us is the wide hinges that hold the screen, quite high we must say. Similarly, the lower frame of the screen is quite wide, standing at almost 35 mm. Of course, the side frames and upper if they are much smaller, 6 mm for the sides and 10 mm for the top.

This configures a large notebook to have a 15.6-inch screen. We are 360mm wide, 263mm deep and 25mm thick when closed. That is, it is practically an ultrabook, with a really tight thickness. The weight it registers is 2.41 Kg, which is not bad for incorporating a mechanical hard drive.

The side areas of the HP OMEN 15 do not keep too many secrets regarding design. We have a flat edge finish for the screen area, and in the same way for the main part, which has a large beveled inside that gives it a sharp look and more gaming. In this way it also gives us the feeling of having a thinner laptop than it is a priori.

Let's start by looking at the right side of the HP OMEN 15 to list all the connectivity we have, which is certainly not a small one. In this, we find a USB 3.1 Gen1 port and the power connector of the laptop. We see then that in this case HP maintains its own power connector, instead of using the Thunderbolt port.

On the left side of it has installed another USB 3.1 Gen1, a combo Jack for micro + audio and another Jack only for microphone. In the area closest to us there is also a multi-format SD card reader.

Finally, in the rear area we have a USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C port that incorporates Thunderbolt 3 connectivity at 40 Gb / s and compatibility with DisplayPort 1.4. A USB 3.1 Gen1, RJ-45 GbE connector ideal for playing on LAN, an HDMI port and another Mini DisplayPort port. Nor could the Kensington lock be missing in this rear area.

We cannot forget the two rear side areas that will be in charge of expelling all the hot air from inside the laptop. The admission on the other hand is made from the lower area, where we have abundant ventilation grilles protected by anti-dust filters.

In the interior base of the keyboard, we also have the presence of brushed aluminum finishes, as well as the lower area. The black color could mislead us and think that it is plastic, but we will only find this material in the area of the internal frames of the screen. We take off the hat before HP giving us so much quality of materials in the visible area.

After this external description and connectivity, we will go on to see in more detail its multimedia and accessibility features. In general, we must say that it is a very attractive laptop, both from the outside and from the inside. While it is true that the hinge area and bottom frame make it too high perhaps, it is due to the width of the bottom area. We already know that gaming laptops almost always have less adjusted dimensions than the rest.

Web camera, microphone

Something that we almost always overlook are the benefits that the camera and the micro of the laptops offer us, and that is why here we are going to study them a little more closely to see what they can offer us. In the central area of the frame we have an HP Wide Vision HD Web Camera with dual matrix digital microphone and omnidirectional pickup pattern.

This camera has a HD resolution of 0.9 MP and is capable of taking photos at 1280 × 720 pixels. Video recording will take place at a maximum resolution of 1280x720p @ 30 FPS. As we can see they are completely standard features, with a capture quality as always questionable in these drivers and with the presence of noise in the images. We did not understand why no manufacturer places somewhat better cameras on laptops, especially knowing that the sensors are only worth a few euros to manufacture.

Regarding the audio, it is heard very correctly, the double microphone captures in perfect stereo and with great fidelity they even speak very quietly about 80 cm from the laptop.

Touchpad and keyboard

Let's go to see a little better the keyboard and touchpad of the HP OMEN 15. In this aspect there are no changes from the previous generation, we have a chewing gum type keyboard with island type keys and the entire complete base made of aluminum.

This keyboard is fully configured with numeric pad. It has a Dragon Red backlight with different colors along the key panel and customizable through OMEN Commander Center. The WASD keys will be lit in a different color to highlight their presence. We can activate or deactivate the backlight using the double function of the "F4" key. Similarly, all F keys have multimedia functions such as audio control, brightness, Windows key lock and touchpad and airplane mode.

The sensations that this HP OMEN 15 keyboard gives us are the standard ones, it is not a keyboard oriented to use it for writing for hours, since the path is very short and the island-type keys do not make things too easy. The general touch is good, especially for gaming, due precisely to that little travel and the little weight that must be put on the keys to press them. Similarly, the central area is as firm as the sides, not causing that sinking feeling of poor quality keyboards.

The touchpad on the other hand has standard measures 103 x 57 mm and is completely fixed to the base. It is very good news to have the buttons located independently of it, especially for gaming and continuous use. In this way we get a much better feeling than the full touchpads without any movement or slack on the sides.

The touch area has a slight roughness that makes it quite pleasant and with good displacement both in any type of conditions. This keyboard also features 26-key AntiGhosting.

Sound and wireless connectivity

We now turn to the part that corresponds to the sound and connectivity system. It is a very important aspect in all laptops and especially in gaming, since the final experience of the player will depend on it.

As in the previous generation, the sound setup consists of two speakers on each side with Bang & Olufsen technology. It also has HP Audio Boost and a dedicated headphone amplifier that provides 3D spatial sound. In practice, this translates into fairly powerful, high-quality sound, presents a good balance between treble, bass and mids, and in perfect stereo.

It is the turn of wireless connectivity, and in this case we do not have any great news regarding the HP OMEN 15 generation with Nvidia GTX. The adapter used is the Intel Wireless-AC 9560 that works under the 802.11 b / g / n / ac protocol in 2 × 2 at 1.74 Gbps and MU-MIMO function. As we always say, we are expecting a Wi-Fi card with the 802.11ax protocol soon, which will give a new life to the ability to play competitively through Wi-Fi. The wireless section is completed with Bluetooth 5.0 + LE.

As for wired connectivity, we also have an RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet port controlled by a Realtek chip.

Available operating system

HP OMEN 15 in this case does not have Windows operating system installed. It is one of the reasons why the price is reduced between 150 and 200 euros, although we will have to install one ourselves, either Windows or Linux…

At the same time the laptop starts, we will have FreeDOS 1.2 available, a basic system distribution. Similarly, the manufacturer has also created a small partition with HP's own files for recovery options.

For our part, we have installed Windows 10 Pro x64 in an unlicensed version to carry out the relevant tests.

screen

The display used by this HP OMEN 15 is another of the team's strengths, both in quality and in the benefits it offers us. With the name, it will be enough to know that it is a 15.6-inch screen with IPS technology for the image panel and WLED backlight. This model offers us a maximum Full HD resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels and most important of all, a refresh rate of 144 Hz that is phenomenal.

We will experience incredible fluidity as soon as we install the graphics card drivers, which in this case is an Nvidia RTX 2060 Max-Q. The panel has a high quality Anti-Glare finish, although with light Bleeding on one side.

We also have other versions with a screen in Full HD at 60 Hz and in 4K resolution at 60 Hz, in some cases with G-Sync. We believe that the ideal for gaming is precisely the one that occupies this review, that is, the Full HD of 144 Hz.

We have done a few tests to determine the factory calibration of the display and its performance in terms of color space. We see that the RGB levels are all 100% maintained, which is a very good signal. To this we add a very small dispersion regarding point D65 (6500K) that coincides with the color temperature obtained.

Finally, the delta calibration is not entirely bad, not exceeding in almost any tested color the value of 5. Remember that the ideal is that they are between 0 and 4 approximately.

Internal Features and Hardware

We leave behind the appearance and external benefits to focus on what we find inside this portable beast.

HP OMEN 15 has the best in terms of high-end processors from Intel, with an Intel Core i7-8750H, a favorite processor by practically all manufacturers of gaming notebooks. An 8th generation Coffee Lake Mobile CPU that has 6 cores and 12 threads of processing along with 9 MB of L3 cache. The speed at which it works is 2.2 GHz in base mode, with Turbo Boost at 4.1 GHz.

Supporting this processor we have a 16 GB 2666 MHz DDR4 RAM memory installed in one of the two SO-DIMM modules available inside. This means that we can expand it with another 16 GB module up to 32 GB. On the one hand, it is positive, because we do not have the two slots occupied, but on the other, we lose the factory possibility of a Dual Channel configuration.

We continue to cite aspects of storage. In this case, HP has opted for a hybrid configuration consisting of a 256 GB Toshiba SSD connected to an M.2 slot under PCIe x4 NVMe interface that can read up to 2800 MB / s. And we still have another M.2 slot to install a second SSD. We also have a 2.5 ”1 TB 7200 RPM mechanical hard drive to store games and files. We must say that we would have liked a 512 GB SSD to go more than that, although we understand that those 1, 600 euros are caused by certain cuts like this.

As a final colophon we have very well hidden under the heatpipes an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card of Max-Q design that is already well known that provides us with a performance of 70% compared to its desktop sister and only consuming a third of it. In this RTX 2060 we have a 1110 MHz GPU in base mode and 1335 MHz in turbo mode capable of Ray Tracing in real time, under a 192-bit interface and with 1920 CUDA cores, 160 TMUs and 48 ROPs, consuming only 80 W power.

We will take advantage of these images to talk a little more about the cooling system. We have a very interesting system and is also widely used in other HP gaming models. In total we have 6 copper heatpipes, although painted in black, two of them capture the heat of the CPU and the other four do the same of the GPU. All this heat is transferred to two side radiators so that an air flow generated by two turbine fans blows it out through the rear vents.

The system is not bad, although even so we will get an interesting heating of the components. In the testing section we will see the temperatures we have obtained both from the CPU and the GPU.

The battery does not have much to comment either, it has a total of 4 cells built in 70 Wh and 4400 mAh lithium ion. It is not too strong a battery to be a gaming laptop. The charger for its part is 200 W of power and will be connected to a dedicated port, so the charging is not done through Thunderbolt.

The autonomy that we have registered is not too good, with a combined use between game, navigation, writing and file transfer, it has lasted about two hours at 50% brightness. With a very conservative energy profile, perhaps we can extend life by another 30 minutes.

HP OMEN Commander Software

Also worthy of mention is the small HP OMEN Command Center program, which will extend the functions of our HP a little more.

We have a fairly complete monitor of activity and temperature for the CPU and GPU and memory utilization. We are also shown the download and upload speed of our network connection, which will be especially interesting when playing through Wi-Fi.

Another option we have is to customize the keyboard lighting, which in this case will be only 4 grouped zones. In this sense we would have liked a more complete customization. We will also have different options for selecting ventilation profiles and equipment performance and the possibility of connecting it with other OMEN equipment we have.

Performance tests and games

We enter the testing phase of this HP OMEN 15 where we will measure the performance we get in games, which ultimately is what this laptop is intended for. We will also not forget the synthetic tests or the speed tests to the SSD.

SSD performance

Let's see the behavior of the Toshiba M.2 SSD by passing it the well-known CristalDiskMark in its version 6.0.2.

The read rates are pretty good overall, bordering on 3000MB / s in sequential read. Where it slackens the most is in writing, which we only carry at 1000 MB / s, a low enough rate for an M.2 PCIe drive. So we must say that this Toshiba unit is quite fair in terms of performance.

CPU and GPU benchmarks

Now we will see the results in benchmarks with the Cinebench R15, PCMark 8 and 3DMark programs in the Time Spy and Fire Strike Ultra and normal tests.

The results obtained with Cinebench R15 show practically the same as in other computers with similar CPUs, impressive scores without a doubt and at the level of the most powerful desktop processors in both multicore and single core.

In the case of benchmarks with 3D programs, we did notice a certain general decline. These lower scores are mainly due to the presence of RAM in Single Channel and possibly to the high temperatures at which the CPU reaches when it is at Full.

Gaming performance

Every detail counts friends, since these scores are always mere reference, we are going to go see the FPS results obtained when we play. In this case we are simply going to perform these tests at the resolution provided by the laptop, that is, 1920x1080p. As always, we have carried out the tests with the FRAPS program in 180-second strips and repeating each test up to 3 times to perform the average, something that has become common.

The experience is very satisfactory, we must bear in mind that in all the tested games we have placed the graphics at Full, ultra or very high, and even so we exceeded 60 FPS comfortably. By lowering the requirements a little we will obtain rates close to 144 Hz that this screen offers us. Notorious also the performance in high consumption games like Metro Exodus with RTX + DLSS activated.

Temperatures

The cooling system performs well, but keeps temperatures quite high, above that of the CPU, at around 80-82 degrees, reaching peaks of up to 88 degrees. This is why more heatpipes are needed in this area, and a somewhat more system overwhelming. In the GPU area we have similar benefits while we play reaching maximum and sustained temperatures of 70 degrees.

Final words and conclusion about HP OMEN 15

We have tested this excellent HP OMEN 15 notebook for several days to form a solid opinion about what it offers us. We have emphasized its use for games, both powered and only with the battery. The duration is more or less than expected, about 60 minutes playing non-stop and about 2 hours making use combined with the brightness at 50%.

Hardware is one of its strengths, with a Core i7-8750H, 16GB of RAM and an incredible Nvidia RTX 2060 inside. The playable 1080p experience is as expected, great performance in all games and maximum graphics, something unthinkable a few years ago on a laptop. What is an upgradeable aspect is the cooling, we know that it is a very thin laptop and that this greatly limits this aspect, but more heatpipes would have come in handy to lower the CPU temperature.

Another asset in its favor is the screen, a high quality IPS panel with a high level of brightness, although great care should be taken when handling it because it is too flexible and Bleeding could appear. The factory calibration is pretty good and the 144 Hz is noticeable in the fluidity of absolutely everything. Something that does weak a bit is the SSD storage section, with a 256 GB drive and somewhat low write rates for the times we are in.

We recommend that you take a look at our guide to the best laptops on the market

The design is undoubtedly one of the strengths of this laptop, we have a thickness of only 25 mm and completely built in aluminum, both in the lower area as well as the lid and keyboard area. The finishes in brushed aluminum, carbon and red elements make it very beautiful and original. We take this opportunity to say that the touchpad is very good in terms of response and touch, and the keyboard for its part also offers good features for playing, although not for long hours.

The HP OMEN Command Center software provides us with interesting management options, both for the network and for the sound and customization of the keyboard lighting. The sound quality is very good, and the Wi-Fi connectivity is nothing out of the ordinary. We did expect a little more from the webcam at this point, especially having such good level microphones.

We are in luck, because we can get this HP OMEN 15 for a price of 1, 600 euros in Spain, which is something very little seen in a laptop with Nvidia RTX 2060. It is true that we cut in some aspects such as SSD, cooling or RAM memory, but in general the performance in games is assured. So they make it one of the best quality / price options in our opinion.
