Unboxing

We have always liked Huawei's presentations, and this time is no exception. The smartphone comes in a black box and made of high quality material, it shows that we are talking about a premium product.

Once we open the box, we see that everything is perfectly protected to avoid any type of damage during transport. Next to the terminal comes a 40W charger, the upgraded USB-C cable needed to run the 40W charge, and EarPods-type headphones. You will also find a inside the box.

Design

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is a terminal that is full of cutting-edge hardware, but its design is not among the most revolutionary. Its curved glass sandwich-based design has been around for quite some time, but it's still among the best options for a flagship like this.

It has measures of 157.8 x 72.3 x 8.6 mm and a weight of 189 grams. A terminal that becomes light and with a design very similar to the competition. Good job! We did not like that the speaker outputs the sound directly from the USB Type-C connector, since it lowers the sound quality somewhat. Although as we read they did not have space to add the speaker due to the size of the battery.

The lock / unlock button is painted red. A quick way to quickly identify one of the buttons we use the most every day.

However, Huawei tried to take a step further in design. While the front is a bezel-less display with a notch, the back we see an exceptionally arranged camera setup. There is also a vinyl-like pattern on the glass, which improves grip by reducing glass slip. Furthermore, this grip surface is more resistant to fingerprints.

screen

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro has a 6.39 "AMOLED screen curved sideways. This model has a resolution of 1440p and has a wonderful pixel density of 539ppi. The OLED panel is flexible and has a fairly prominent top notch. Perhaps a drop type notch would look much better and we would get more out of the notification icons. The screen has a useful percentage of 84%, the sensations are impressive.

The notch is big, much bigger than the Mate 20's similar notch, but there is a reason for that. In addition to the selfie camera and earphone, which also doubles as a speaker, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro also has an infrared camera and illuminator for advanced face unlock. Also in the notch is a pair of sensors and a small LED for notifications.

Face recognition and fingerprint reader

Huawei could have invested in more secure facial recognition, but it did not abandon the fingerprint reader. On the contrary, it is still present and cutting edge, residing under the screen. Huawei claims that the Huawei Mate 20 Pro's dynamic pressure sensor is 30% faster than the previous one.

The fingerprint reader is placed behind the glass of the screen. In a single position and recognition is quite fast, but not as fast as the Huawei P10, Huawei P20 and P20 PRO. This is because we have to press and hold our finger for 1 to 3 seconds to read our fingerprint.

We like that it incorporates the fingerprint reader on the screen, but realistically, there are other models that as simple as swiping your finger does. It will surely be an improvement for a future review next year.

After being with the Huawei Mate 20 PRO for three weeks, we have quickly got used to its fingerprint reader and when we tried other terminals we missed it. It only lacks that it has a somewhat faster response. We are super happy with the work Huawei is doing. Let the rest of the manufacturers tremble.

High level cameras

We arrived at one of the most outstanding points of this premium terminal. The incorporation of three cameras on the back, a super optimized software that has more and more updates and the use of artificial intelligence to improve our captures are its strongest points.

The back of the Huawei Mate 20 Pr o hides a new square camera setup with three sensors. The fourth circle contains the dual LED flash. This camera retains retains the main 40MP sensor and 8MP OIS 80mm telephoto lens of the Huawei P20 Pro, but the monochrome camera has been removed. Instead, Huawei has added a new 20MP secondary sensor with a 16mm f / 2.2 wide- angle lens.

The night shots are impressive, the camera for taking selfies is quite good and the possibilities offered by both automatic, manual and effects shooting are impressive.

Battery

Inside the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is a large 4, 200 mAh battery with support for Huawei's latest 40W SuperCharge solution. The Mate 20 Pro also supports 15W wireless charging. The large battery will have no problem feeding the powerful hardware of this terminal for hours.

Talking about screen hours is very relative, since it depends on the user's use and the need to use it. Personally the Pocophone lasted between 7 and 8 hours, with this Mate 20 PRO I am skimming 6 and a half hours. It's not bad at all!

performance

Huawei has assembled a Kirin 980 processor, which consists of two Cortex A76 cores at a speed of up to 2.6 GHz, along with two of these cores at 1.92 GHz and four Cortex A55 cores at a speed of 1.8 GHz. This is a big.LITTLE configuration focused on maximizing energy efficiency while the terminal is capable of offering the best possible performance.

The A55 cores will be used for light duty, while the A76 cores will be used for the most demanding applications. Graphics is provided by the Mali-G76 MP10 GPU, which offers ten cores based on ARM's most modern and advanced architecture. This GPU will make all the games on Google Play go as one shot.

The processor is accompanied by 6 GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 128 GB of storage, the latter being expandable with one of the memory cards mentioned above, supports up to 256 GB. With Antutu we have reached some 271, 439 points which are quite good. The truth, that although it is not the clearest performance measure, it serves as a reference with respect to another smartphone.

Operating system: Android 9 Pie under EMUI V9.0

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro runs Android 9 Pie under its fully custom EMUI V9.0 launcher. Android purists are guaranteed to dislike this combo, but Huawei has been known for its custom launcher for years and no one should have expected a stock Android.

Huawei has cleaned up the general interface and the settings panel has been simplified by hiding little used settings in the advanced categories. Huawei's built-in apps are also seeing updated navigation menus at the bottom of the screen to make them easier to reach.

EMUI 9.0 also comes with GPU Turbo 2.0, it works for faster application startup and there is a new password store. The Mate 20 Pro also supports blocking apps with face authorization. There's also a HiVision Travel Assistant, and the company's developed digital scale app, which tells how much time you're spending on your phone and gives you the option to limit yourself.

Connectivity and endurance

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro does not have an audio jack, but it is IP68 rated for dust and water resistance. Protection is a step above the Mate 10 Pro's IP67 since last fall.

Huawei has created a new memory card standard and the Mate 20 phones are the first to introduce it, it's called a Nano Memory Card and it's shaped like a nanoSIM card. This has immediate benefits for the phone manufacturer as it allows them to make a smaller card slot while still allowing for memory expansion. Huawei Mate 20 Pro has a double-sided SIM slot and its bottom tray accepts one of those new cards or a nanoSIM.

These cards are so new that you will have a hard time finding one available to buy. Huawei will make the first models, but they expect other memory card manufacturers to join soon. Until they become mass-market products, they will surely cost much more than old microSD cards.

Sound

And while we're on the subject of questionable decisions, guess where the second speaker is? It's inside the USB port! The good news is that the port hole can be used as an amplification chamber. There are also two microphones on the bottom of the HUawei Mate 20 Pro, but one of them is very close to the SIM card tray and can easily be mistaken for its eject hole.

Final words and conclusion about Huawei Mate 20 Pro

Huawei is betting on an 8-core Kirin 980 processor, a 2.6 GHz frequency, a Mali G76 graphics card and a total of 6 GB of RAM. At fluency level it is great and the EMUI operating system has improved a lot.

The rear and front camera system is great. Each photo has an incredible level of detail and looks great at night. The integration of artificial intelligence helps a lot in better capturing our captures and better definition.

We recommend reading the best high-end smartphones

After a month of use with the phone we can not be happier with the battery. Personally I have obtained about 6 hours and a half of screen with a high use. When normally other phones have done much less. Good work Huawei!

Leaving aside that we do not agree that a smartphone costs 1, 000 euros or more. We have to take into account that its characteristics are extraordinary, the level of photography is beastly, making it the best option offered by the high-end market. Terminals from Samsung, Apple and other manufacturers are one seat below the new Mate 20 PRO.

Currently we can buy it for 1, 049 euros in the main online stores in its version of 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal memory. What do you think of the Huawei Mate 20 PRO? Did you buy it? Do you consider it the best high-end smartphone on the market? For us yes!
