Five months after its launch, the Asian manufacturer has finally sent us its high-end smartphone: Huawei P30 PRO. A 6.47 ″ smartphone with FHD + resolution, 6GB of RAM, a Kirin 980 processor and a set of cameras that make it one of the best options on the market.

In this analysis we will try to give you an analysis as deep as possible and with our sincere opinion. Prepare your favorite soft drink with ice, what do we start!

As always, we thank Huawei for the trust placed in us when transferring the product to us for analysis.

Unboxing of the Huawei P30 PRO

As expected, the company continues to take care of both the design of its terminals and that of its packaging. On the cover we see in a very elegant typography the name of the product and the Leica signature on the four cameras of the Huawei P30 PRO.

In the previous area we did not find anything remarkable. Once the box is open, we will run into the following bundle:

  • Smartphone Huawei P30 PRO The power adapter The charging cable The SIM card extractor A quick guide

Sober and elegant design

The Huawei Mate 30 PRO has great finishes and a design that lives up to what is expected of it, a high-end device. Taking a closer look, we are not surprised by the traditional aluminum alloy body and the incorporation of the now classic: Corning Gorilla Glass.

The terminal has curved edges on both the rear and screen sides, the grip is very good with one hand and if we have some "skill" we do not need to use both hands. Although for these purposes, it is preferable to lose some privileges and opt for the Huawei P30 "just plain".

For lovers of size and that each mm / weight matters, we leave you its dimensions of 73.4 mm x 158.0 mm x 8.4 mm and a weight of 192 grams. Very compact dimensions and a weight very similar to that of its competitors.

We arrive at one of the most important points of a terminal. The screen has an aspect of 19.5: 9 and a useful area of 88%, to which we must count a notch of the drop type, very careful, and which has the front camera inside. It is also important to know that the edges around the screen are minimal, that is, just a couple of millimeters.

In the upper area we have a microphone for noise cancellation. While on the left edge we do not have any buttons and in the right area it houses the volume button with function to raise or lower it and the on and off button.

Finally, at the bottom edge is the tray to insert two nanoSIM cards without the possibility of inserting any microSD card. In this same area, the microUSB type C connector, the microphone for calls and the multimedia speaker are located.

Honestly, and personally, the back in design is amazing. This is the blue color version, but we also have it available in black, cyan, red and white. All of them with a “wave” effect in double two-tone color that everyone is surprised and falls in love with. Too bad that by putting many covers, we lose that "sexapil".

OLED screen and curve

The Huawei P30 PRO mounts a 6.47-inch OLED screen and a 1080 x 2340 px FHD + resolution. Its pixel density is high at 398 PPI, the edges are minimal, and its drop-style notch is quite small, but not nearly as much as that of OnePlus 7.

Regarding the quality of the screen, it stands out for the really good color reproduction that reproduces the DCI-P3 and HDR color range, although it is almost at the same level as other terminals, such as the Huawei Mate 20 PRO.

By incorporating a curved screen design and 88% useful area, we have the perfect combo to get the most out of our mobile. But this type of design suffers a lot from falls and we must equip it yes or yes with a good cover. As always we recommend the Ringke and Nillkin brands, two manufacturers that offer a multitude of options and unquestionable quality.

Many users complain that its OLED screen instead of AMOLED is a step backwards. The reality is that the viewing angles and color rendering are remarkable. In full light we can use the phone without any problem and while we play the experience is very good. It is true that not having 90 Hz on the screen, we lose experience, but we understand that this will leave it for future gaming terminals instead of consumption.

Crisp and clear sound. But… Enough?

It only has a speaker in the lower area. We have tried different songs / series and the sound reproduced sounds clear, clear without intermixing and in turn the good work of the bass is appreciated. Volume at full power sounds very powerful and distortion free. That is, the perfect set to succeed, although a double speaker would have been great for a greater investment.

Huawei has decided not to incorporate a 3.5mm jack connection… and we will need a thief with a microUSB type C connection or a wireless headset. After our tests with a Razer Hammerhead USB C and the sensations are fantastic. At the height of the Mate 20 PRO or my current Google Pixel 3XL.

EMUI Operating System

As expected, the Huawei P30 PRO brings Android 9 Pie along with the EMUI customization layer in its latest version. Unlike other terminals, it seems to us that this customization layer is very heavy and very aggressive to the user.

Although its customization is quite complete, it is not at the level of a pure Android or other layers such as Oxygen . We believe that the layer is the black point of this terminal… One of the options to improve in future revisions or finally see your HarmonyOS operating system based on Linux.

On the other hand, with the exception of Huawei's own apps and utilities, which are not few, no junk or bloatware applications that are unnecessary for the user are housed pre-installed. The operating system runs fast, is safe and allows us a lot of customization. In case we don't like this layer, we can always mask it with a launcher like Nova Launcher Prime.

Performance and performance of the Huawei P30 PRO

The Huawei P30 PRO has the best processor made by the company, the eight-core HiSilicon KIRIN 980 with four Cortex 485 cores at 1.8 GHz, another two cores at 1.92 GHz and two faster ones at 2.6 GHz . This is accompanied by the Mali G76 GPU and 6 to 8 GB of LPDDR4X RAM depending on the model we buy.

We are talking about a terminal with great performance capacity and some of the best features on the market. The result given by AnTuTu in our analyzed model of 6 GB of RAM gave a score of 293529 pts. A very high score that tops the list of mobile devices this year, until the next generation of smartphone comes out this September.

The available internal storage is UFS 3.0 and you can find both 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. By accompanying all the previous equipment plus this storage, we ensure a terminal for several years. Although many times, the news makes us move to another more modern terminal. The games perform very well and for my taste they have nothing to envy to other terminals, except for the screen, the performance is sublime.

Unlocking with a fingerprint under the screen works great, and as is characteristic of Huawei… it is fast and error-free. We have also been able to see how the unlocking is carried out quickly and accurately. As we can see, a very complete terminal?

The best camera set on a smartphone?

The triple rear camera is one of the most important aspects of this Huawei P30 PRO. Huawei considers its terminal to be the best smartphone for taking pictures. Additionally, it has a TOF sensor, which has been very critical and is not without reason.

We have a 40 megapixel CMOS BSI main camera with Sony IMX650 Exmor RS sensor with 1.6 focal aperture and 1, 000 µm pixel size. The second sensor features a resolution of 20 MPx and a f2.2 focal aperture. And a third of 8 MP as periscope…

Okay, this is all very nice… but how does it perform? Without a doubt it is one of the best cameras. With the main sensor we can take some very good photos, with a lot of light and a dynamic contrast that defends itself well in some situations even in automatic mode. Autofocus is a section that works wonderfully in bright environments and is something that we already saw in the Huawei Mate 20 PRO last year.

The wide angle camera gives us a plus when taking pictures. The image range while maintaining a fairly good level of detail and colors similar to the main camera. It would really be one of the reasons to buy this terminal and its good feelings when taking pictures at night.

The portrait mode or bokeh effect offers us very good feelings. It cuts the background pretty well and the Gaussian blur is almost ten. For us it is one of the best we have tried to date. Only the Pixel 3XL would cough.

At the recording level, it allows us to record in 4K at 30 FPS. Yes, that for a smartphone at this resolution, 30 FPS is more than enough, but it is something that is missed. Although everything indicates that for the Mate 30 PRO and the Kirin 990 we will finally have the option to record at 4K and 60 FPS. Of course, we have noticed that the Huawei P30 PRO records better at 4K than Full HD at 60 FPS…

Battery and c

Inside the Huawei P30 Pro is a large 4, 200 mAh battery with support for the latest 40W SuperCharge solution. This smartphone also supports 15W wireless charging. The large battery will have no problem feeding the powerful hardware of this terminal for hours.

Talking about screen hours is very relative, since it depends on the user's use and the need to use it. Personally, the Huawei P30 PRO is touching 6 hours on average. So I consider it a very good terminal for those users who need to get to the end of the day left over or endure without charging the mobile for a day and a half with moderate use.

The Huawei P30 Pro includes most of the expected features of a high-end terminal. such as low-power Bluetooth 5.0 LE, Wi-Fi bands 802.11 and 5 Ghz, Wi-Fi MiMO. A-GPS, Beidou, Galileo, GLONASS, GPS, NFC and VoLTE. With the only absence of the Radio Fm and the audio jack connector that we have already indicated above.

Conclusion and final words of the Huawei P30 PRO

The Huawei P30 PRO offers us everything we can ask of a top-of-the-range smartphone. It has a powerful 8-core Kirin 980 processor, 6 GB of RAM, 128 or 256 GB of storage, a set of cameras to take off your hat and perfect performance to play.

The cameras is the strongest point of this terminal. Its quality when capturing images, the possibility of using a hybrid zoom, good colorimetry and how it captures photos in low light. The TOF sensor we have not seen any improvement… we still think that this technology is not activated or this terminal does not work well.

We recommend reading our guide to the best high-end smartphones

Although it has Android 9 Pie, its EMUI layer is super aggressive and we don't like it at all. We always end up installing a launcher to leave it to our liking. Of course, the camera application is very good and is one of the best we've tested.

Currently we can buy the Huawei P30 PRO from 680 euros on Amazon Spain. It is clear that its price at launch was high, after a few months on the market, we can find it for a much more attractive price. What do you think of this terminal? Do you think it's worth it?
