Today we analyze what is perhaps the best phone launched by Huawei in 2019. The Huawei Mate 30 Pro is the super flagship of the Chinese brand, a beast both in design and in gross power that comes to compete directly with the iPhone, Samsung and everything that gets ahead.

It has an innovative glass design with an extremely original rear camera arrangement. But the front is even better, with 90o of curvature on its 6.53 ”OLED screen. Debuts a CPU, a KIRIN 990, 8 GB of RAM, up to 256 GB of storage, and of course an exceptional photography experience. It only has one problem: it does not include Google services.

Let's start this analysis not without first thanking Huawei for trusting us to lend us this phone and to be able to do its analysis.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro technical characteristics

Unboxing

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro will come to us in a fairly hard cardboard box in the most traditional style, with tight dimensions and sliding opening. This case is completely black with the phone's logo and below the insignia of Leica, the manufacturer of camera lenses. On the back we have a sticker with the specifications of the model we have.

Without further ado we open this box and we are on the first floor with the phone, wrapped in the typical protective plastic. We removed the cover from this level to find now the nanoSIM tray extractor. And the other elements to load the terminal.

So this bundle has the following elements:

  • Smartphone Huawei Mate 30 Pro Extractor for SIM tray USB-C USB-A cable for charging and data 40W charger USB Type-C headphones User manual and warranty

A fairly complete bundle that does not give up the Type-C headphones in this case instead of finding the typical adapter that had been included. But we have two important absences, and that is that it does not include a protective cover for the terminal or a screen protector . Huawei wants us to show off the terminal and wants to show that it is very hard, so if we want this type of extra protection, we will have to buy it separately.

Yes, we liked the fact that finding the maximum capacity 40W charger is the least they could do after spending around 1000 euros worth of the terminal. The USB cable has its mouths in purple to distinguish that it is the original.

Sober, high-end design

Without a doubt one of the great qualities of this Huawei Mate 30 Pro is the exquisite design that has been taken from the sleeve. It is shown that everything is not yet seen in terminals and makes clear from the zero minute that feeling that we are dealing with a very expensive and Premium mobile, something that does not always happen.

It is a fairly compact terminal despite its large screen, measuring 73.1 mm wide, 158.1 mm long and 8.8 mm thick, so it is also finite. The weight rises to 198 grams mainly due to the massive use of glass and its huge 4500 mAh battery. It has IP68 certification, being submersible at 2 meters depth for 30 minutes.

At the front, what stands out the most is the large 90 ° curvature on the sides of its 6.53-inch screen, which occupies no less than 94% of usable area. It is the steepest curve carried out so far, and it also reaches the middle of the profile, leaving the power button well below. In the absence of side frames, we have some very well used both above and below. We find the presence of a fairly wide but very shallow notch, which has been necessary to house all the front sensors.

The back has a spectacular design, of course, with glass throughout the area and a mirror finish that will be available in black, green, purple and silver. It is a very sober finish, but also quite dirty as it is a mirror type, so let's keep that in mind. The touch in hand is great, if you feel slippery even without a cover.

What stands out the most from the back of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro is the camera panel. A configuration could be used, we could say button type, because it is round with cameras grouped in pairs. It takes up a lot of space and protrudes approximately 1 mm from the rear. To make its presence more noticeable we have a ring around this panel in the same glass, but with a different reflection that is more noticeable in light colors. Outside of this "button" we have the laser focus sensor and the Dual-LED flash.

We now continue with the edges, which are very clean due to the fact that they are largely occupied by the screen. Its finishes are made of an anti-scratch aluminum alloy like the rest of the terminal, although on the sides this element reaches its minimum expression due to the large surface area of the screen.

On the sides we only have an unlock or power button, without physical volume buttons. We just have to double tap anywhere on the side to unfold the volume bar and move it. It is a very successful solution and with maximum success, even more comfortable than the buttons since it can be done in any area.

On top of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro we have only the noise canceling microphone and the infrared sensor. While at the bottom we see the USB-C connector, the opening for the speaker and the small slot for the tray with capacity for dual Nano SIM or SIM + NanoSD. Without a doubt one of the best terminals of 2019 in terms of design, few terminals give as much Premium feeling as this Huawei Mate 30 Pro.

OLED screen with 90 degree curvature

We continue with another of the main sections of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro that of course its screen.

In this case we find a panel of OLED technology and 6.53 inches, so it is a fairly large screen in which to enjoy multimedia content. Few terminals have a space so exploited, with 94% of usable area thanks to those highly exploited sides. That 90's curvature or make it a very futuristic phone even with its notorious notch.

Continuing with the characteristics of this screen, it has an FHD + resolution of 2400x1176p, which generates a density of 409 dpi. In it we have 100% NTSC and DCI-P3 coverage, HDR10 support and Alway-On Display function. There's also no missing Corning Gorilla Glass scratch-resistant coating.

As for the quality of the panel, it is obviously one of the best we have tested, both for calibration and for sharpness and quality of colors, with a very high brightness. They look quite saturated without losing that fidelity to reality and above all a very neutral white. We could say that on par with the Samsung, the Pixel or even the iPhone, but also not surpassing them.

Something that in this case we would have liked is that its refresh rate was 90 Hz to be up to other gaming-oriented terminals or its direct competition such as OnePlus or Samsung.

Sound system

We also take advantage of this multimedia section to talk about the sound system of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, which in this case consists of a single speaker at the bottom with output from the side edge. It offers the ability to play 32-bit audio at 384 kHz. It is good, but not exceptional as one would expect in a terminal of 1000 euros, and we have lacked a second speaker to generate that stereo experience.

You will have seen before that 3.5 mm Jack is not included, something perfectly normal in flagships today. However, Huawei has included a headset with a cable and a USB-C connector in the bundle, so to begin with we will not have to buy an adapter and independent ones.

Security systems

We now continue with another important section that is security. The Huawei Mate 30 Pro integrates the fingerprint reader on the screen as normal. A sensor that works very well with a very low failure rate and a high speed in both detection and unlock animation, something that is appreciated. In addition, its location is more or less the standard, perfectly accessible for the thumb or index finger.

The facial recognition system is self-implemented as we already know in Huawei, and works more or less the same as in other models, with no apparent news. It has the ability to register not only our face, but also the sides to provide a higher hit rate and security. With no Pop-up camera system or anything like that, recognition is virtually instantaneous. The recognition is carried out with a third sensor located in the notch area next to the two front cameras.

Hardware and performance

We leave behind the multimedia and biometric registration section to focus on the hardware of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, which in this case is one of the most powerful on the market, even surpassing the Apple A13 in graphics power.

It is the HiSilicon KIRIN 990, a new generation 64-bit processor of our own manufacture with a manufacturing process of 7 nm +, that is, an optimization of the architecture of the previous silicon. Inside we have a total of 8 ARM cores, with 2 Cortex A76 working at 2.86 GHz, 2 Cortex A76 at 2.09 GHz and 4 Cortex A55 at 1.88 GHz, thus bordering on 3 GHz in a mobile processor, Something awesome.

This is accompanied by an ARM Mali-G76 MP16 GPU that will offer us brutal performance in gaming and multimedia without jerks. It implements Kirin Gaming + 2.0 technology and 1 + 1 Da Vinci NPU cores. In our country at least we only have a version with 8 GB of LPDDR4X type RAM working at 2166 MHz.

Finally we will have two versions available in Europe as far as storage is concerned, with 128 and 256 GB. There is also a 512GB version that doesn't seem to be available yet. In all cases, UFS 3.0 storage is used , which comes very well to increase fluidity and in the opening of games and large volume files. The SIM slot has capacity for Nano SD cards, let's not confuse it with traditional Micro SD, although it would have been a better option for price and versatility.

It should be noted that we will soon have a version of the Mate 30 Pro with 5G, thanks to a variant of this KIRIN 990 5G processor that includes support for the new "Internet of Things" network

Next, we leave you with the score obtained in AnTuTu Benchmark, the benchmark software par excellence in the finished Android and iOS. In the same way, we will leave you the results obtained in the 3DMark and Geekbench 4 benchmark to see where it is located in our table.

With Android 10 Q, but without Google services

Having been a Smartphone launched at the end of 2019, it is not a novelty that the Huawei Mate 30 Pro brings the Android 10 Q system from the factory along with its EMUI 10 customization layer. A system with better security and performance, and one of the best layers on the market, with great fluidity, simple minimalist interface and great experience.

But of course, here comes the main and almost the only problem for Huawei, the total absence of Google services, being here where Trump has done the most harm to the Chinese. What does this mean? Well, for starters we will not have the Google Play store in our operating system, so all those applications, in principle, will not be available. But these services also extend to the location of the device, navigation and integration with utilities such as Android auto, Google Assistant or Chrome.

It is not the end of the world clear, because with a little trickery and a tutorial we can install it without major problems, but you have to know that the ROM is not fully compatible with them.

We leave you a video of Eloy Gómez where he explains how to install it step by step. Highly recommended reading.

When browsing, for example, we do not have the real-time assistant, and the integration with Android auto is fine, but it de-configures the phone's call functions. What makes us have to go to the options to reestablish the traditional calling system. The GPS is not very fine either, at least with Google Maps, things get a little complicated. Hopefully Huawei fix these problems or offer an alternative so that the user can opt 100% for their new devices.

TOP photography and tough rival of the iPhone on video

And if you plan to buy this Huawei Mate 30 Pro for its camera, we think that your purchase will be more than successful, because the Chinese continue to dominate this section, especially in versatility. With this model they have also expanded possibilities, staying on the podium positions in terms of photographic quality. All lenses are signed by Leica, being a guarantee of quality.

Where they have improved the most is in the video section, where they were clearly below Apple. It is not that they have exceeded them, but we do see a significant improvement.

Rear sensors

Starting with the rear configuration we find:

  • 40MP Sony IMX600 main sensor with 1.6 focal aperture and 50-102400 CMOS-type lens. This camera is equivalent to a 27 mm, and we also have optical stabilization, autofocus, HDR + and 4K @ 60 FPS video recording capacity. 40 MP wide angle sensor Sony IMX608 with 1.8 focal length and also CMOS lens. Equivalent to 18mm and a field of view greater than 120o, while also being stabilized. Third sensor with 8MP telephoto function with 2.4 focal length equivalent to 80mm. This offers us a 3x optical zoom, which combined with the main one allows a hybrid 5x and digital zoom of no less than 30x. One of the most powerful on the market today. The fourth sensor is a 2 MP 3D ToF to support portrait mode and provide effects in video recording. Finally we have a dual-LED flash and laser focus capability.

Among the video enhancements we have better optical stabilization at 60 FPS rates and better color adjustment in difficult conditions. But something that seems crazy to us is its ability to record in slow motion. The Huawei Mate 30 Pro is capable of recording in 1080p at 960 FPS, and attention, in 720p at 7680p. A true leftover at the level of those videos that we can see on YouTube in ultra slow motion, something to show off in front of our friends.

Front camera

We now turn to see the front configuration, which in this case is as follows:

  • 32MP Sony IMX616 main sensor with 2.0 focal aperture and CMOS-type lens also signed by Leica. Equivalent to 26mm and offers the possibility to record in 4K @ 30 FPS with stabilization. 3D ToF depth sensor for portrait mode

4500 mAh battery and full connectivity pack

Also in the battery section, a great job has been done on the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, since we have a capacity of 4500 mAh. We come from mid-range and high-end terminals that mostly have a huge capacity of 4000 mAh or more and Huawei did not want to be less, giving us a really good autonomy.

But it's not just about capacity, because we have 40W fast charging with charger included in the box, 27W wireless charging and reversible wireless charging capacity. We can say then that this phone charges twice as fast wirelessly as the iPhone 11, as is. And it is only surpassed in fast charge by the Realme X2 pro and its 50W.

Its autonomy is very good and we can get a total of 8 hours of screen with the use we give it daily. That is, we have 2 full days of battery life.

We do not want to leave anything behind and it only remains to talk about its connectivity, which will be more or less as expected. So we found NFC connectivity compatible with mobile payment and infrared, along with A-GPS, Beidou, Galileo (E1 + E5a), GLONASS, GPS and QZSS. As we mentioned, we have 4G and 5G versions coming soon and Wi-Fi connectivity under 802.11n / ac Dual band Bluetooth 5.1 LE. In this case we would have liked the Wi-Fi to be ax, just like the Samsung flagships, since it is a standard that has been with us for more than a year and we still see it in very few terminals.

Final words and conclusion about the Huawei Mate 30 Pro

Huawei has once again made a great terminal. The Huawei Mate 30 PRO is one of the best high-end smartphones we've tested. Its screen makes you fall in love at first sight, its autonomy is fantastic, the cameras offer spectacular performance and its hardware is top-notch.

The only one but we find it with Google services, which after the veto of the United States cannot install the services of giant G to its new terminals. It can be done manually, but it is not 100% fine. For example, Google Pay does not work and we have to use other alternatives as a means of payment.

Its price is currently 1099 euros, a high price but if we compare it with the competition it has nothing to envy its direct rivals. What do you think of the Huawei Mate 30 PRO?
