A few months ago Huawei launched the Huawei P10 betting on some continuous features and newer ones. After having tried it for a while, we leave you our final impressions to assess whether it is still a faithful candidate of the high range.

Huawei P10 technical characteristics

Unboxing

The box in which the terminal comes, is already surprising by its opening system. With slight sideways pressure from the top, the box opens into two halves. It is a different system than what we are used to with a box housed inside another. Inside we find:

  • The Huawei P10 MicroUSB Cable Type C Connector for Power In-Ear Headphones via 3.5mm Jack Plug SIM Slot Extractor

Design and Ergonomics

Huawei decided to follow a conservative trail regarding the design chosen in this terminal; Of which there are clear influences of its predecessor, the P9. For example, the measures 145mm x 69.3mm x 6.98mm show that despite the current trend of increasingly larger terminals, Huawei is still betting on more manageable and contained dimensions. The same happens with its 145 grams that are barely noticeable and give a feeling of lightness.

Not only the measures are taken care of. The unibody aluminum construction with plastic bands and curves are the main denominator of this terminal. Curves that are found both in the rounded edges that join the sides, and in the curvature between these edges and the screen. Therefore, Huawei has called this screen: 2.5D. However, the screen does not quite come together with the side edges. A small frame remains. It is hidden, but it is. This part of the terminal is protected with Gorilla Glass.

These curves and the aluminum of its body are what make the P10 feel so good in hand along with its measurements as I mentioned earlier.

The arrangement of the buttons and the other components is quite similar to those of the previous model. On the upper side edge, we find a microphone for noise cancellation. On the right two buttons, one upper only to increase and decrease the volume depending on where we press and another lower to turn the device on or off. The latter has a distinctive pink color surrounding it for easy viewing and a rough touch to make it easier to feel. Simple things but they never hurt.

On the left side edge is the slot for inserting both a nanoSIM and a microSD card. Finally, on the bottom edge is the microUSB type C port, the 3.5mm jack plug, the call microphone and the multimedia speaker.

At the rear is the dual camera at the top next to the flash, the name of the LEICA company that has helped develop the camera and the model number. The cameras are protected by Gorilla Glass and have no protrusion, which is welcome.

The biggest novelty in terms of design compared to the P9 is found in the front. Not at the top, where the call speaker, proximity sensor and front camera are located as usual. It is at the bottom front where Huawei decided to include the fingerprint sensor instead of at the back where it already worked well. This is due to the greater importance of the sensor for navigation through the phone interface. It is an interesting function that we will describe in its respective section.

In general the design is a success in all aspects. It is true that despite having little frame on the sides, they have not squeezed the rest of the frames to stuff a larger screen. A trend which is increasingly used by manufacturers. It should be noted that it is possible to find the terminal in eight different colors.

screen

Huawei continues to bet on including a 1080p resolution in its terminals. Similarly, they continue to rely on panels with NEO technology (IPS for other mortals). All this framed in the 5.1 inches that the screen has and that provides a pixel density of 434 per inch.

You see the good work of the company and it is understood that they continue working on something they already know. It should be noted the vividness with which the colors are represented, and the good contrast that the screen has without being AMOLED. Thus, the effort to take advantage of the IPS panels is evident. This is helped by up to 500 nits of brightness that the screen can give. Still, even outdoors with lots of sun, you sometimes need more shine.

OS

Android 7.0 Nougat is the base operating system on which Huawei's EMUI 5.1 interface is supported. This customization layer has been gradually improved with each terminal.

This new version has inherited some functions already implemented in EMUI 5.0 with Mate 9 and has improved them. As they are the technology for the intelligent management of the memory RAM and applications in the background; a better classification of the photos in the gallery and the improvement in the response of the touch screen reducing its latency.

It is also appreciated that with each new update the customization layer is more similar to pure Android, saving the distances. If in itself, the design can sometimes be reminiscent of an Iphone. The default desktop style accentuates it further. This desktop keeps the icons grouped by folders. Luckily for those who do not like it, in settings there is the possibility of changing the style of the desktop to another with an application drawer.

This type of layers always includes some other option or application to change the theme of the interface or utilities that do not hurt. The problem comes with the inclusion of applications that are not useful for the average user. That continues to happen even with EMUI and by now they should be leaving it optional.

It also incorporates in settings other options that can come in handy to use the knuckles (yes, you read correctly: the knuckles. Not the fingers) to use gestures to open applications or take a screenshot when tapping twice with them.

Another interesting adjustment that more and more manufacturers adds is to clone an application to be able to use two different users. In this case it is called Twin Applications.

However, the quintessential feature on this device and the reason why the fingerprint sensor is located on the front is the use of the fingerprint sensor instead of the buttons to move around the interface. A quick touch will go back, a touch holding your finger for a few seconds will return us to the main menu, sliding your finger from right to left will open the app selector in the background and slide your finger from a point outside the sensor towards the screen will open Google voice recognition.

It seems cumbersome but once one practices it a few times, one begins to see how useful and practical it is. Its use has the advantage of having more space on the screen by eliminating the digital button bar. Of course, this function does not come by default and must be enabled in the settings.

performance

As we've already seen, this P10 drinks a lot from its predecessors. In this section it will not be different. The P10 mounts the same Soc Kirin 960 that will already mount the mate 9. This has an architecture of eight cores subdivided into two clusters as usual and which are used according to the required tasks. The included GPU is the eight-core ARM Mali G71.

Without a doubt it is a powerful hardware today if we talk about the mid-range, although the P10 obviously surpasses its most recent predecessors and some of the flagships of other brands from the beginning of 2017. At this point its power is far from the new terminals launched in recent months.

However, Huawei continues to put all the meat on the grill even without using Qualcomm processors. For those not looking for a top of the range, the P10 performs well in any task. On the one hand, video recording has been improved with the new processor, now having the possibility of recording content in 4K. Likewise, LTE technology has seen improvement in its upload speed, going from category 11 to 12.

On the other hand, the system in general feels more efficient and fluid thanks to the intelligent management that accelerates the performance of the applications and that, as I already mentioned, is inherited from the Mate 9 but better polished and supported by the inclusion of UFS memory 2.1. This memory is implemented apart from the 4GB of RAM that includes the default terminal and provides an almost double transfer speed.

Despite the fluidity of the system, it is not entirely solid. Several times we have found that some application crashes. This may come from the implementation of the new smart resource management. Therefore, it is more than likely that they should continue to polish it in order to improve it.

One of the best sections of this smartphone is the fingerprint reader. It works out of ten. Not only does it respond well, but in addition to its excellent precision, it responds quickly. It is one of the best features of the P10.

Camera

Huawei realized long ago that not everything could stay in processing power and in a beautiful design. That is why with each model has tried to refine the section of photography. First with the inclusion of the double camera and second with the help of the Leica company and its lenses. In this case, both sensors are the Summarit H 1: 2.2 / 27 ASPH with a 2.2 focal length aperture and a 27mm focal length. The first camera is 12 megapixel sRGB with optical stabilization and the second camera is monochrome with 20 megapixels. Only the first one has optical stabilization.

The quality of color photos is really good. The photos are not without a lot of grain, and despite the understanding made, they maintain all the details and color fidelity. It can only be blamed, showing the colors a little more washed than expected. Which is only appreciable when compared to other higher-end terminals.

The monochrome camera, however, takes more impressive shots. Despite disregarding colors, the level of detail and monochromatic scale create beautiful scenes.

In a low light or night environment, the camera performs well. It is not its strong point, but it has surprised me when comparing it with other terminals. Sometimes the system needs us to keep the camera still for a few seconds after taking a photo and thus capture more information. But in night scenes this is more pressing since the sensors need to capture more information.

In an interrelated way with the cameras, the post-processing software that the terminal has is in charge of performing a 3D facial analysis and detecting the surrounding lighting to adjust the photos. All this helps the wide aperture mode achieve a much better Bokeh effect than that of other cameras.

It is also worth noting the inclusion of the hybrid zoom for both photo and video. It is a software option that, despite not having the quality of the optics, it always comes in handy to have it.

Among the video options we have as a novelty the possibility of recording at 4K thanks to the new processor and it complies excellently. The terminal also offers the possibility of recording in 1080p at 60fps. Although neither of those two video modes offers image stabilization. Only 1080p at 30fps mode allows you to use that option.

Finally, we must not forget the front selfie camera that has 8 megapixels. The Leica company has also worked on it, making it possible for the sensor to capture even twice as much light and automatically switching to wide angle when there is a group in front of the camera. However, when it comes down to it, the quality is somewhat poorer than expected. Sinning the captures of little detail and chromatic range.

Sound

The speaker at the bottom edge of the P10 has more than decent power and loudness for both multimedia playback and hands-free calling. At no time does the sound sound canned or noisy.

The headphones that come in the box also have a fairly good quality of materials and a more than correct sound.

Battery

The battery is one of the most significant aspects when looking for a smartphone. The P10 has a 3200 mAh capacity battery. A considerable capacity today and that more and more models are adopting but which is compensated by the increase in other benefits. On paper its capacity is always overestimated. However, after its testing we have seen that, with moderate use, the battery lasts well until the end of the day with about 5 hours of screen.

Therefore, it must be taken into account that, if it is going to be used more, an intermediate load will be necessary. Luckily, fast charging or Supercharge as Huawei has called it, allows us to charge half the terminal's battery in half an hour. That speed can save us on many occasions.

However, it takes an hour and a half to fully charge. It is also appreciated that Huawei includes in its devices the Super Safe system to monitor during the charging process different aspects of temperature, electrical intensity and voltage to ensure charging.

Connectivity

Apart from LTE support with Cat. 12; The P10 also features WiFi n and Wifi + 2.0, Bluetooth 4.2 with a low energy profile, MIMO, NFC and GPS technology using the GLONASS and Galileo satellites.

Conclusion and final words of Huawei P10

Little by little, Huawei knows how to take the best of each of its previously launched products to improve its future models. In this Huawei P10 you can see that journey and the improvement in many of its sections. It does not get to be included within the high-end devices, but it does belong to the medium-high ones.

Sections such as the careful design, the excellent quality of the screen, the precision of its fingerprint reader or the super fast charge are points that guarantee the quality achieved. There are improved sections such as system performance and the camera, but they also have something to polish.

Conversely, some aspects of the customization layer like the default apps still don't sit well. It must also be recognized that for those looking for the most cutting edge in design or power, they will not find what they are looking for in the P10. For everyone else it can be a smartphone to keep in mind as long as they take into account its price. Since its launch it has had a higher price than expected, although it is already possible to find it close to € 400. A price more in line with what it offers.
