IBM today announced a major development, seeking to revolutionize the industry. The American company presents the first 5 nanometer chip.
IBM introduces the first 5 nanometer chip
Currently, all chips below 22 nanometer use the FinFET method. But this method only reaches 7 nanometers. Therefore, the GAAFET method will be used to reach 5 nanometers. It is hoped that this method can even reach 3 nanometers.
What do we know about this chip?
Thanks to the development of the GAAFET method, the chip will be made more reliable and offer better performance. It is expected to offer a performance improvement of 40%, while maintaining the same consumption, compared to the existing 10-nanometer chips. Keep in mind that the 10 nanometer chips are very recent. Currently, most of those on the market are 10 or 12 nanometers.
