Intel announces its optane-based m.2 800p drives

Intel continues to bet strongly on its 3D Xpoint memory technology, better known as Optane, which promises to leave NAND in its infancy but has not yet achieved its goal of standing out from the latter. The semiconductor giant has announced its new Optane- based M.2 Intel 800P drives.

These new Intel 800p SSDs arrive in an M.2 format with capacities of 60 GB and 120 GB, very low for what we are used to seeing today. This is because Optane memory is much more expensive to manufacture than NAND, so for now we have to settle for low-capacity disks. Where these drives really stand out is in their durability, Intel promises they will hold up to 200GB of written data every day for five years.

Intel Optane vs SSD: all the information

No performance data has been given but we should not expect a revolution, in fact they are based on a PCI Express 3.0 x2 interface so they do not even come with a x4 configuration of the best NVMe disks, it is very likely that their speed is at the pair or even below these.

In any case, the Optane technology is gradually establishing itself, until now there were only 32 GB models at most for the domestic sector, so little by little we are getting closer to more adequate capacities. Hopefully this year 2018 will be the year of the definitive settlement of Optane technology, so users will have new options to choose from.
