Intel has updated the ARK information page, with the introduction of its new Core i3-8121U processor based on the Cannon Lake architecture, and its advanced 10nm Tri-Gate manufacturing process. Thanks to this update, it is known that Cannon Lake will be compatible with the new AVX-512 instruction set.

Cannon Lake marks the arrival of AVX-512 instructions to Intel's range of mainstream processors, all the details

The Core i3-8121U becomes the company's first mainstream processor to feature this extremely advanced instruction set, which can significantly boost performance as long as the software ships. AVX-512 made its debut with the HPC Xeon Phi Knights Landing processor and Core Skylake X processors. This new instruction is very powerful in compression tasks although it needs developers to make use of the new compiler developed by Intel so that it can be used.

The instructions are part of the microarchitecture of the processor and are the source of its performance, therefore both Intel and AMD increase the number of instructions supported for each new generation of processors to improve their capabilities.

AVX-512 may be Cannon Lake's most important innovation, not forgetting of course the move to Intel's advanced 10nm manufacturing process, which is having much more difficulties than anticipated, so it already takes several years to delay.
