The latest updates to Intel's Linux DRM kernel driver and coreboot reveal quite interesting information about upcoming Intel Comet Lake (CML) processors.

Intel Core 'Comet Lake' would come out in the middle of this year

Comet Lake will be the successor to the Intel Coffee Lake and Whiskey Lake architectures. The description in the Linux DRM kernel driver update says "Comet Lake comes off of Coffee Lake" . Therefore Comet Lake will be yet another 'refreshment' from Intel that was originally based on Skylake and will continue to use the 14nm process.

The driver update also says Comet Lake will continue to use the iGPU Gen9 (Generation 9) that debuted with Skylake and continues to be used to this day. There are mentions of both GT1 and GT2 configurations (GT stands for Graphics Technology).

On the other hand, coreboot , an open source project to replace BIOS and UEFI, has vital information about this new generation. According to the Github page, Comet Lake-U (CML-U) processors, which are mainly intended for laptop computers, have up to six cores, while Comet Lake-H (CFL-H) and Comet Lake-S (CMT-S) have up to 10 cores.

The upcoming AMD Ryzen 3000 series processors are rumored to contain a whopping 16 cores on a single chip. During CES 2019 in January, a 16-core, 16-core Ryzen 3000 series chip was trading blows with Intel's Core i9-9900K, which could have pressured the maker from Santa Clara to increase the number of cores to 10.

Intel is expected to launch its Comet Lake processors in the middle of the year. Intel may be able to announce the chips at Computex 2019, which begins May 28.
