Intel Core i7 8700K hit the market quite a few months ago as the company's new flagship for the mainstream platform. A chip that led to a 6-core configuration after more than ten years stagnant in all 4 cores. A special version in the form of the Intel Core i7 8086K has now been released at higher clock frequencies to celebrate the 40th birthday of x86 architecture. Let's take a look at it to find out what Intel has prepared for us.

Will this new processor rise to the occasion? Is the extra outlay worth it? All this and more we will see in our review in Spanish. Here we go!

As always, we thank Intel for the trust placed in ceding the product to us for analysis.

Intel Core i7 8086K technical features

Unboxing and design

Intel Core i7 8086K is a new processor that comes to the market to celebrate 40 years of the x86 architecture, which is present in all the processors of our PCs. It is a very special processor, from which only limited units will be manufactured in the form of special edition.

First, let's take a look at the presentation of the Intel Core i7 8086K processor. As usual, the chip comes in a very small cardboard box based on predominantly blue color.

The box is very small, since Intel does not include a heatsink in this processor, to understand that it is focused on overclocking and therefore its heatsinks are not enough to keep it cool. It has a high quality print, with all the most important features and specifications perfectly detailed.

When opening the box we see the processor itself very well protected by a plastic blister to avoid any type of damage during its transport to the hands of the end user. Intel's processors are not as delicate as AMD's because the pins are on the motherboard, even so it is very important that it comes perfectly protected, since it is a product with a fairly high price. Next to the processor we see all the documentation.

We already focus on the Intel Core i7 8086K, as expected, at first glance we do not see any difference with its younger brothers of the eighth generation. The processor mounts an IHS with a completely flat surface for excellent contact with the heatsink base, this IHS is screen printed with the main details of the processor such as its name, frequency and place of manufacture.

On the back of the processor we have the contacts for the 1151 pins of the motherboard socket, all of them protected with gold to avoid corrosion over the years and that the contact is perfect all the time that it lasts.

The Intel Core i7 8086K is still a processor belonging to the eighth generation of Intel Core processors, so it is based on the Coffee Lake architecture. It really is a special version of the Core i7 8700K, with higher clock speeds, so we can already get an idea of the few innovations it includes at the design level. This increase in clock frequencies has been possible thanks to the maturity of the process at 14 nm ++ Intel's Tri Gate, the most advanced in the world and which allows these processors to be very efficient with energy consumption

The Intel Core i7 8086K is capable of reaching a speed of 4 GHz in base mode and 5 GHz in Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 mode, thus becoming the first Intel processor that is capable of reaching 5 GHz at the factory. These high clock speeds will serve to reaffirm Intel's leadership in the video game market, where its chips are the undisputed leaders in performance due to their high operating frequencies.

It is impressive that Intel has managed to maintain a 95W TDP in a 6-core and 12-wire processor capable of reaching 5 GHz, this speaks highly of its manufacturing process and excellent architecture. The L3 cache is maintained at 12MB, with optimized access technology so that each core can access just the amount it needs.

Intel Core i7 8086K has integrated Intel UHD 630 graphics so you can use it without the need to mount a dedicated graphics card. This graphics engine is capable of reaching a clock speed of 1200 MHz, and offers excellent multimedia capabilities, even being able to decode and encode 4K video in advanced HEVC and VP9 10-bit codecs among many others. It is not a graphics processor with great performance in video games, but for multimedia it is the best.

We have just seen its most important characteristics with its DDR4-2666 MHz memory controller, compatibility with Intel Optane and the use of the LGA 1151 socket together with the Intel 3000 chipsets.

To check the stability of the Intel Core i7 8086K processor in stock values and with overclock. All our tests have been stressing the processor with AIDA64 and with its air cooling as standard. Overclocking

As expected at the overclock level, it does not rise too much, since having the limitation of the IHS glued with silicone, the contact is not perfect and raising more than 5100 MHz in all the cores is not feasible. If you do Delid and with a very good refrigeration, surely you can go much higher.

Consumption and temperature

Final words and conclusion about Intel Core i7 8086K

The Intel Core i7 8086K is one of the best processors on the market that the market offers. 6 physical cores together with 12 logical ones, a base frequency of 4 GHz that with the turbo goes up to 5 GHz, 12 MB of cache, supports up to 64 GB of DDR4 memory at 2666 MHz (can be increased to more MHz) and a TDP up to 95W.

Although in all the tests we have carried out we have obtained a great result. Reality shows that it is an i7-8700K that has been raised to the frequency of 5000 MHz and that we did not find any more important improvement.

We have also overclocked with a slight rise of 100 MHz. For practical purposes we have hardly noticed any improvement, in most cases we have gained 1 FPS with a much higher voltage rise.

In Gaming we do not see a beastly improvement, better minima and the benefits of having such a powerful processor with a high frequency. Many of you will wonder, is it worth buying an i7-80860K if I have an i7-8700K? Clearly it is not and more with the current price of 439.90 euros in the main online stores.

What do you think of this processor? Would you buy it for its 40th anniversary or do you prefer an Intel Core i7-8700k?
