In this comparison we have used the results obtained in each review and current tests carried out on the Gigabyte AERO 15-X9 and AORUS 15-XA laptops, two computers with similar hardware except for their CPU.

The Core i7-8750H has undoubtedly marked an era in gaming laptops to date. Quite a beast of 6 cores of 8th generation Coffee Lake that has been used by absolutely all manufacturers of notebook gaming and non-gaming, in fact, practically all of our most recent reviews have the presence of this processor.

On the other hand, we have the new Intel Core i7-9750H, a CPU recently released by the blue giant and which aims to be the new benchmark in laptops until the arrival of the hypothetical 10nm architecture, unless you get a 10th generation of course. According to the manufacturer, this 6-core CPU is also capable of 28% more than its previous brother. We are here to corroborate this, although of course, they are two non-identical laptops, with different cooling systems and that will influence the result a little.

Let's start as always with the table that includes all the technical characteristics of the processors. In this way we can see the differences that have been implemented in the new Core family.

From this table we can make it clear that the main innovations of the processor come in its increase in clock frequency in a total of 40 MHz both in base frequency and turbo, and yes, from a 3 MB increase in its L3 cache. Instead, the L1 and L2 cache has been kept exactly the same, with 32KB per core for instruction and data caching, and 256KB per core for the L2 cache.

Another aspect that has also been updated is the ability to support up to 128 GB of RAM, which is something never seen in a laptop, and that marries the identical update in the entire range of 9th generation processors, although beware, in Dual Channel, not Quad Channel as it happens with the LGA 2066 platform.

This is the basic hardware of the notebooks, as we see is quite similar, if not the same, since for example the RAM memory is exactly the same and from the same brand. The same goes for the graphics card, which is an Nvidia RTX 2070 in both units, which will greatly facilitate the fact of obtaining identical results in them.

Something that will be differential is the cooling system, although the truth is that temperatures will not vary too much. In fact, during the tests we obtained a load temperature of 81ºC on the AORUS GPU and 86ºC on the Gigabyte, and 89ºC on the AORUS CPU and 92 on the Gigabyte.

Synthetic tests for Intel Core i7-9750H vs Intel Core i7-8750H

As they are two computers focused on gaming, the best we can do is show the results of the benchmarks made to both teams during their respective reviews. Of course this score includes the performance of the graphics card and also the CPU as a whole.

In view of the results we see evident improvements in the total set of GPU + CPU, we also noticed a better optimized performance in general during our use with the laptop, which, ultimately, is what it is about. In this sense, once again, the cooling system in both cases was good, and the temperatures were controlled during the performance of the benchmarks. Also, the programs were in the same version.

Starting with the pure CPU test, we can see a performance improvement of the i7-9750H with respect to the previous model, it is not too much, but the increase in frequency and cache means that now the ability to render both multi-core and single-core will be a Little better. Of course, in this case we do not see that 28% that the brand promised, rather it has remained a 5% improvement. If we consider that the cost of laptops with both generations will be similar, we will definitely opt for this new CPU.

Now let's go to see the results of the synthetic tests with 3DMark. The graphics show a notable improvement, but what if we go specifically to the results obtained from the CPU? 6598 against 5065, obtaining then the i7-9750H a 23% more score, which, in this case, is close to 28% of what we were talking about at the beginning. In the rest of the scores we also see significant improvements that are also around this percentage of increase.

For its part in PCMark 8, a good program to determine the fluidity and performance of the general set of the PC, we also see a significantly higher score in the AORUS. We are talking about a 19% more score than the previous generation. We corroborate then that it is a more powerful set, and let's not forget that the only thing that changes is the CPU, because even the operating system is the same, even the SSD drive of the Gigabyte AERO 15-X9 turned out to have better performance.

Gaming performance

We have already seen that, in terms of performance in synthetic tests, the laptop with CPU Core i7-9750H prevails in all cases, will it be the same when it comes to playing?

The graphic configuration in all cases is exactly the same, the only difference lies in the version of the drivers that have been recently updated. In any case, this is not reason enough to see the considerable better performance that the new Intel CPU gives us.

In titles like Tomb Rider or Deux EX we got to see considerable improvements exceeding 20 FPS. In others like Doom 4 or Final Fantasy XV this improvement is reduced to a few FPS. And finally we have Metro Éxodus, in which we have obtained a lower performance, which in this case could be due to the capture of frames in different phases of the game.

In any case, the general improvements are very notable and we do see that quality leap that makes all the hardware work better and make the most of this RTX 2070 Max-Q

Temperatures of both laptops

Although it is not an integral part of the comparison, since this rather affects the specific laptop models, we are going to give a review of the operating temperatures that we obtained in both teams.

Recall that both had a system with two turbine-type fans, although larger and more powerful than the model with Core i7-9750H. Similarly, the configuration of heat pipes is 2 for the Gigabyte AERO 15-X9 and 3 for the AORUS 15-XA.

The results are certainly similar, but in general, we have noticed that this new CPU is hotter than the previous one, both due to the temperature peaks obtained up to 95 degrees and due to a greater heating in stock. Imagine if we didn't have that improvement in the cooling system as far as we would go.

Well, we have virtually no doubts that Intel has indeed improved overall performance with this new generation of processors, and it is truly significant that further improvements can still be made from a 14nm Lithograph that has been with us for several years and up to 9 generations..

As far as refrigeration is concerned, we already know that the more frequency, the more heat it will give off, this is not a secret, and AORUS has had to renew its entire refrigeration system to keep temperatures at levels similar to that of the i7-8750H.. And the truth is that this new system is efficient, but also quite noisy.

Gaming performance is the perfect showcase to finally determine that this new CPU does indeed represent an improvement in overall performance, and in view of the similar prices that we are seeing in the new units, we recommend that you go for this new generation, although don't introduce 128 GB of RAM. Of course, we have not seen this improvement of 28% anywhere, rather it has remained at 20% at most, and caught with tweezers.
