Intel is preparing to carry out a major expansion of its Oregon research factory known as D1X. This plan to expand its factory in the United States would begin in June, where billions of dollars will be invested.

The expansion is likely due to Intel adopting extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV), which requires machinery that costs about $ 120 million and is as big as a bus.

Intel is making progress in developing its 7nm technology that uses EUV to be able to design more complex chips with higher performance and lower power consumption. The current D1X research facility occupies an area spanning 2.2 million square feet of space and is equivalent to 15 Costco warehouses. The expansion is expected to increase that D1X factory by an additional 1.1 million square feet. Intel may announce the expansion on Thursday when it publishes its financial results for 2018.

Intel's D1X Factory: Intel's main research factory, D1X, is where the company develops each new generation of microprocessors and begins manufacturing them. The company duplicates the production process invented in Oregon at factories in Arizona, Ireland and Israel.

Dan Hutcheson, a longtime chip industry watcher and CEO of VLSI Research, said Intel's Oregon plans don't surprise him; technical advance requires significant investment. "Keep breaking barriers, " said Hutcheson. "Part of it is making the billion dollar bet for the future."

Intel continues with its expansion plan, so that the problems it had with the 10 nm node do not occur again.
