The ninth generation of Intel Core Coffee Lake processors is about to receive a new iteration and its launch would be very close. Motherboard manufacturers like ASUS, Gigabyte, and ASRock already have new BIOS available to support them. These new processors are known as R0 stepping.

New Intel Core Coffee Lake processors have new R0 stepping

In the past, a new 'stepping' has meant hardware changes like bug fixes, cache sizes, or other relatively minor features. At times, it has also changed the clock speeds and the TDP. This time, Intel has not revealed what this new stepping will bring. Both Gigabyte and ASUS, the first with BIOS updates, have also not revealed what these new processors will bring.

The new chips should launch in the coming weeks, fully entering the second quarter of this year. Hopefully we will get more information about it. Gigabyte in their notes indicated that the new stepping is R0, compared to the current stepping that is P0. Since the 14nm ++ node is already quite mature, a change in the node is unlikely to occur.

With a launch scheduled for the second quarter, one can't help but wonder if it's related to the upcoming AMD Ryzen 3000 series processors. With a revamped architecture and process, AMD can gain ground on today's 9th generation CPUs if Intel does nothing about it. An adjustment to lower TDP and / or increase clocks and cache in a minor way would be interesting. We will keep you informed.
