The Kingston DataTraveler 2000 boasts of being the safest USB flash drive on the market thanks to its hardware encryption and PIN protection with access through an alphanumeric keyboard integrated into the body of the device itself. It also has a USB 3.1 interface for maximum transfer speed and is built with an aluminum body for great durability.
First of all, we thank Kingston for the trust he placed in giving us the DataTraveler 2000 for analysis.
Unboxing
The Kingston DataTraveler 2000 comes with a plastic blister for your protection, in this aspect there is no difference with the majority of flash drives on the market. On the front we see the logo of the brand, the name of the product and several of its specifications such as capacity, type of interface and it tells us that the product has a 3-year warranty.
On the back we see a small compatibility table with the different operating systems (Windows 7 or higher, OS X 10.8 or higher, Linux 2.6 or higher, Chrome OS and Android), some bullets that show us how they work and also inform us of It has a 3.7V and 40 mAh battery to keep active the internal electronics that are in charge of managing the security encryption.
We open the blister and we only find the pendrive, a protective hood and the small brochure that we already see before opening it and that has a small quick start guide.
specs
The Kingston DataTraveler 2000 has slightly higher dimensions (80 x 20 x 10.5mm) than most other USB flash drives with a similar capacity, something undoubtedly caused by the electronics required for its hardware encryption system. It has a modern USB 3.1 interface that allows it to reach a reading speed of up to 135 MB / s in the 32 GB and 64 GB models and a write rate of 40 MB / s in the same models. We have the 16 GB drive that is made up of about 120 MB / s of reading and 20 MB / s of writing, figures that are still very good, although in writing it is more just.
As for compatibility, we will not have any problem and we will be able to use it on many devices thanks to the fact that it is supported by all the most popular operating systems and with versions of these that have been around for years. So we can use it on any Windows 7 or higher system, Mac OS X 10.8 or higher, Linux 2.6 or higher and Chrome OS and Android systems.
Finally we talk about security and it is that the Kingston DataTraveler 2000 is the safest USB flash drive on the market and by far, with its AES 256-bit hardware encryption system you can be sure that your files will be protected in the best possible way. All encryption is done on the same flash drive so it does not depend on the computer at all and nobody will be able to hack it to break its security, nobody will be able to access its content without your consent.
Kingston DataTraveler 2000
Its design is intended for IT security professionals, small and medium businesses and end users who require electronic data protection. DataTraveler 2000 has a separate operating system and the information is protected with AES 256-bit hardware-based encryption in XTS mode. Encryption is done on the drive and no software or hardware drivers are required.
The DataTraveler 2000 alphanumeric keyboard allows users to lock the USB with a word or combination of numbers. For added security, the automatic lock function is activated when the unit is removed from the device and the encryption key and password are cleared after 10 failed connection attempts. DataTraveler 2000 is built with resistance in mind, so it has an aluminum cover that protects the unit from everyday elements, such as water and dust.
Tests
We have subjected the DataTraveler 2000 to a test bench to see its file read and write speed and to see if it meets what the manufacturer promises. The tests have been done by copying 1.16 GB AVI from the pendrive to a 240 GB Corsair Neutron XT SSD and vice versa, this SSD is a unit with a very high performance and we have chosen it to ensure that there is no bottleneck and that we extract the maximum performance from the flash drive, these have been the results obtained:
Copy Pendrive to SSD
Copied SSD to Pendrive
I have been pleasantly surprised to see that the performance of the pendrive is superior to that promised by the manufacturer, the writing speed has been almost 60 MB / s, which triples the 20 MB / s that Kingston promises. For its part, the reading speed has been extraordinary when copying the file from the pendrive to the SSD in just a couple of seconds, I have had to repeat the operation because I had not had time to capture?
We have also passed the DataTraveler 2000 through the CristalDiskMark test to see the results it returns, as we always do when we analyze a storage unit.
In this case the write speed obtained also triples what was promised by the manufacturer, the reading speed is also slightly higher.
DataTraveler 2000 Encryption
The Kingston DataTraveler 2000 uses the advanced 256-bit AES hardware encryption system that offers multiple security options as we will see below. The flash drive includes a manual (in English) in PDF format that details all the procedures explained below.
First use of DataTraveler 2000
The pendrive comes from the factory encrypted with a default password, this is 1-1-2-2-3-3-4-4 and we must enter it to access the device, for this we have to press the key of the key, enter the 8 numbers and press the key again. After this we will see how the green light located in the upper right part lights up, indicating that the flash drive is unlocked, we only have to connect it to the computer and we can access it. The pendrive is automatically locked again when it is removed from the system.
Change DataTraveler 2000 password
It is highly recommended that we change the password of our flash drive, for this we must take into account that:
- Must be between 7 and 15 characters long, cannot be limited to repetitive or consecutive numbers (3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3, 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8, 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1)
To change the password we will first have to enter the default password, as explained in the previous section. Once the pendrive is unlocked, press the key of the key twice, enter the new password, press the key of the key twice, enter the new password again and press the key of the key twice.
Activate automatic locking
The DataTraveler 2000 includes a security function that automatically blocks it after a certain time connected to the USB port of the computer, something very useful if you want the USB stick to hang without disconnecting it from the USB port after a while. This function is deactivated as standard but its activation is very simple.
First we have to unlock the USB key with its respective password, then we press the key key three times, then we press keys 8 and 5, we press the key key once again, we enter the time in minutes that we want the pendrive to wait before it locks (01 = 1 minute, 02 = 2 minutes, 03 = 3 minutes… 99 = 99 minutes) and we press the key again.
WE RECOMMEND YOU We give away a high security flash drive: Kingston DataTraveler Locker + G3Turn off automatic lock
To deactivate the automatic blocking that we have activated in the previous section we just have to follow a simple procedure. First of all we unlock the USB key with its password, we press the key key three times, we press keys 8 and 5, we press the key key once again, we press the 0 key twice and we press the the key once.
Activate read-only mode
The DataTraveler 2000 can be configured in read-only mode to prevent its content from being accidentally deleted, for this we just have to follow the following procedure. First of all we unlock the flash drive with its password, we press the key of the key three times, we press keys 7 and 6 and we press the key of the key once again.
Turn off read-only mode
To deactivate the read-only mode we have to unlock the pendrive with its password, press the key key three times, press keys 7 and 9 and press the key key once again.
Factory reset DataTraveler 2000
If for some reason we need to return the flash drive to its factory state, we can do it with a simple procedure. First we have to press and hold number 7 and then press the key on the key. We release both keys and press the number 9 three times, finally we press and hold the number 7 and press the key of the key.
Last words and conclusion
The DataTraveler 2000 is a champion of security, if you are looking for a flash drive in which to save your most important files and you want them to be safe, this is your best option without any doubt, it has no rivals in the market. Its performance is excellent with very high read and write speeds, especially reading, which will allow you to access your files faster and speed up copying and deletion operations. Its encryption system is completely independent of the computer so you will have the security that nobody can break it to access its content.
Its design has a high quality for great durability and that it does not deteriorate with time or with use. Its protective cover is oversized to make it more difficult to lose and helps to give more protection to the device.
Finally, the use of a USB 3.1 interface allows it to have the best possible performance and at the same time maintains compatibility with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 so that you can also use it on older computers.
It is already on sale in the main online stores for prices of 119 euros for the 16 GB unit, 149 euros for the 32 GB unit and 199 euros for the 64 GB unit.
