Cancellation of Computex 2020 seems practically safe
According to Health Minister Chen Shih -Chung, restrictions for foreigners will begin on Thursday, March 19. Diplomats, flight personnel and those with permanent residence permits will be exempt from these restrictions. Anyone entering the country must be in isolation for 14 days. The number of COVID-19 cases in Taiwan has been particularly stable until recently, rising from 50 to 100 infected last week. Most of them come from Europe, Dubai and the United States.
Taiwan has also set Level 3 (the highest) of travel alert for the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the European Union, asking its citizens not to travel to these areas. Flights to and from Taiwan are now virtually suspended as the companies are canceling dozens of flights each day. TAITRA, the organization of Computex, has not yet made an official statement although it is expected that at this point all conferences and fairs in Taiwan will be suspended indefinitely. At the end of February, the organizers were sure that Computex 2020 would go ahead with a special focus on sanitary measures and hygiene.
In 2003, with the spread of SARS, the organization postponed Computex's date to September instead of its usual June date. Taiwan had 346 confirmed cases of SARS at the time, while Coronavirus has only been detected in 100 people this week.
