Wccftech sources claim that AMD has finalized the first design of the GPU, to be called Navi 12. The first known chip will have 40 CUs.

AMD's Navi 12 GPU will have 40 CUs

It seems that the Navi 12 name is a strange codename. AMD was expected to launch under the name "Navi 10" (similar to what it did with Vega), but that doesn't seem to be the case. AMD's nomenclature is based on the timeline the arrays were designed in and what this essentially means is that AMD is not ready to launch the Navi 10 yet, which is good news since Navi 12 seems to be a continuation or update of the Polaris series.

Everything seems to indicate that Navi 12 is not going to be the GPU used by the PlayStation 5, but is a derivation of the current Navi and has been created specifically so that AMD can bring it to the PC market.

Navi will be a new microarchitecture, the first AMD Radeon uArch that will not be based on GCN. Navi 12 would be the first Navi chip to be released before Navi 10 and a hypothetical Navi 20. At this point, it is not known if the same Stream Processors number will be the same as in GCN (2560 SP).

AMD TLDR roadmap, based on data provided by Wccftech:

  • 7nm Vega will not be used in gaming GPUs The Navi 12 will be the first to arrive and will land sometime in the first half of 2019. The Navi 10 has been discarded or will be released later, in late 2019 or early 2020, depending of a couple of factors. The performance level of this part will be equivalent to Vega and it will be a small 7nm based GPU Navi 20 is going to be the true high end GPU built in the 7nm node and as things stand right now they could be released In late 2020 - 2021, Navi will also be the first architecture to move away from GCN. The 'Next-Gen' architecture is the uArch architecture that was previously internally called KUMA before AMD decided it didn't like that name too much.

As always, take this information with some care (Although the source is usually very reliable), at least, until it can be verified with other sources later.
