Although researchers expect 3D NAND flash technology to reach 140 layers by 2021, the technology and manufacturers have yet to take all the intermediate steps before that happens. More layers for SSD drives means more storage capacity, and therefore lower cost per GB, which is currently one of Achilles' big heels for solid drives.
As Western Digital announced earlier, this initial production is likely delivering 256GB capacity chips, with performance enhancements to allow for future capacity growth, eventually up to 1TB of capacity per chip.
