Micron 7300: nvme drives for the masses with 96-layer nand

Parallel to the 5300 series with SATA connection, Micron has introduced new business SSDs with PCIe and NVMe . The Micron 7300 series also uses the current generation 3D-NAND with a 96-layer architecture. These drives promise up to 3, 000 MB / s via PCIe 3.0 x4.

Micron 7300: NVMe for the masses

There is no high performance, but it offers significantly higher performance than SATA SSDs. Micron talks about "NVMe for the masses" and prices that should be close to SATA models.

Model selection is diverse, with two sub-series, three different form factors, and partly large performance differences. The 7300 Pro with guaranteed durability of 1 DWPD (Drive Write Per Day) is available as a 2.5-inch version with U.2 connection in capacities from 960 GB to 7.68 TB and transfer speeds from 2, 400 to 3, 000 MB / s read and 700 to 1, 800 MB / s write. M.2 variants of the 7300 Pro are also planned, offering 480GB to 3.84TB, 1, 300 to 3, 000MB / s read, and 400 to 1, 000MB / s write. For 3.84TB and 1.92TB, a 110mm long M.2 module is used, while the smaller variants are 80mm long.

The 7300 Max has more spare memory for a longer life of 3 DPWD, but less useful memory in return. The U.2 version offers 800GB to 6.4TB with similar sequential transfer rates, but superior 4K random write performance to that of the 7300 Pro. Both M.2 models in the 7300-Max series offer 400GB u 800 GB on an 80 mm long board.

Common to all PCIe 3.0 x4 models, a dual port (2 × 2) connection is also supported. The average latency for access to random data is given by Micron as 90 µs read and 25 µs write. Additionally, 256-bit AES encryption and power failure protection are used to advertise data in cache (in flight).

Micron makes no public statement on the prices of the 7300 SSDs.
