Logitech MX Keys Design
The Logitech MX Keys is a slim, low-profile keyboard that features very little lift in both structure and keys on the chassis.
Frame
The general design opts for smooth and curvilinear forms in which it flees from right angles. The switches sit on a one-piece metal chassis with its greyish color and pearl luster.
The Logitech MX Keys is a keyboard that does not have lift pins. In its place, the rear area of its frame has a bar-shaped structure that generates a very slight elevation, reaching its maximum in only 20.5 mm. One aspect that can also lead to confusion initially is its size, since the reduced dimensions lead us to expect a reduced weight. The Logitech MX Keys reaches 810g, being a fairly solid keyboard although the first impression is lightness.
The switches that have activity LEDs are the Caps Lock and buttons 1, 2 and 3 for connectivity to devices located in the upper line of the crosshead of directional arrows.
In the rear area, only the connection for charging via USB type C and the manual on / off switch of the keyboard itself are noticeable. In the upper area, the slot where the colored LED notifies us of the state of the Logitech MX Keys battery during use is also observable.
The reverse side, for its part, is of a clean design, with a total of six non-slip rubber supports and a plastic finish identical to that of the cover except for the slightly darker color.
Switches
The switches used for the Logitech MX Keys are scissor, a variant of the conventional membrane switches. This models also uses a rubber dome but to press the keys, the difference being that they incorporate a plastic scissor-shaped mechanism that allows them to press the key all the way down. This structure provides less displacement and faster return to the original position. The travel is very short, so that the elevation of these switches on the structure is minimal.
The design of the buttons is rounded at the edges and with the presence of a central concave depression in each of its pieces (except those dedicated to functions and space bar). This design indirectly offers our fingers a more ergonomic and stable central pressing position.
The font used in the switches is sans serif , fine and discreet. The readability that it offers is quite clear to be of a large size in the stroke. We must point out that although the keyboard has a backlight, it is not per key and the characters do not light up. These are screen printed in white on the keys, not made with double injection.
The wire
The charging cable included in the cleat of the Logitech MX Keys is thin, with a rubberized coating and a total length of 135cm. Its use makes it possible to use the keyboard while it is charging connected to the computer, which is undoubtedly an advantage despite the fact that the length may be somewhat short. However, we must not forget that loading is something circumstantial.
Putting Logitech MX Keys into use
We come here to the section where we comment on our impressions of the performance of the Logitech MX Keys, and we can't think of anything better to start with than its autonomy.
The LED positioned in the upper left corner acts as a notification to inform us about the status of the keyboard battery. The Logitech MX Keys does not run on batteries, but has an integrated battery that is located inside the rear elevation of the same.
We found that its performance can vary depending on whether or not we use the backlight of the keys. With it activated we can wait for about ten days of charge, while without light it reaches approximately five months.
The Logitech MX Keys switches are ergonomically very short and smooth. This is a direct consequence of the scissor mechanism with which it is assembled. Additionally we have that its loudness is quite low for this same reason, being an ideal candidate for office environments.
Moving on to also comment on connectivity, the availability of Bluetooth as an alternative to the USB receiver is a very positive complement in environments of mobile devices such as tablets or smartphones, something that together with its simultaneous connection with up to three computers provides versatility against which it is difficult to compete.
software
When we connect our Logitech MX Keys to the computer for the first time via receiver or cable, the operating system will record the execution of the software, which in this case is Logitech Options.
This brand application offers us easy and intuitive options to customize and improve the performance of Logitech mice, keyboards and touchpads, adapting them to our needs.
Initially, we will receive a tutorial where Logitech Options takes us through the functions to customize before heading to the main menu, within which we can toggle between the keyboard tab and Easy Switch:
- Keyboard: Assignment of functions and quick shortcuts to the Fn keys, whether from actions specific to the operating system or specific applications. Easy Switch - Manages paired displays using Logitech Options and assigning each of them to specific buttons on the keyboard.
The list of tasks that allow to assign to the twelve function buttons has a considerable size and give rise to the opening of specific files or multimedia functions among many other alternatives.
Additionally, in the All Applications button, we can add its specific execution to the Logitech MX Keys or manually set already installed programs such as Photoshop or Illustator.
illumination
Turning to comment on the use of the keyboard with backlight, we have been using it with it active and this is white in all keys, although we did not find that its main utility is to facilitate their visibility but rather the state of keyboard activity. The photosensitive sensors adjust the intensity of the brightness and the proximity sensors activate the backlight in the vicinity of our hands.
The Logitech MX Keys would probably gain charm if the key characters were also backlit, although the switch mechanism is part of the reason this is not possible. Its brightness is not especially intense, which on the other hand would be somewhat unpleasant if we consider that it is white, so that on a personal level it seems to us more a decorative complement than a functional aspect.
Final words and conclusions about Logitech MX Keys
The Logitech MX Keys is a keyboard that for the inexperienced eye may not have anything out of the ordinary, but it is an ideal complement for creative studios with a very dynamic environment where connectivity is the key.
Graphic designers or web programmers who work with multiple screens are the ones who will be able to make the most of the options offered by the Flow function, although this requires a Logitech mouse from the Masters range or another compatible model in addition to the Logitech Options software. Likewise, we can always take advantage of the program's functions to assign specific applications or actions to the function buttons via software.
We recommend reading: Best keyboards on the market.
It is also worth noting its great autonomy, which can reach up to five months with the lighting off. We can acquire the Logitech MX Keys for € 115 on its Official Website. We are aware that the price is high for an average user, although we must keep in mind the public to whom it is directed. Its target audience is very specific, as well as the functions that we can develop with it.
