Intel CPU cores in this segment, like the "Goldmont Plus, " only have shared L2 caches in 4-core modules. The inclusion of a level 3 cache could increase the performance of these low-power chips.

The introduction of the L3 cache was indicated by a new performance counter "MEM_LOAD_UOPS_RETIRED_L3_HIT", with a description that clearly mentioned a "level 3 cache".

The introduction of the L3 cache as a SoC LLC (last level cache) could mean that Intel is trying to improve communication between components by introducing an L3 cache as a “town-square” for the various components of the SoC, such as the CPU cores, the integrated graphics (iGPU) and the integrated chipset.

The company could use a ring-bus interconnection that has ring stops on different components and different pieces of L3 cache. Intel is building the "Snow Ridge" silicon on top of its sleek new 10nm silicon manufacturing process, and the chip could see its 2020 debut targeting network infrastructure devices.

Intel seems to have made the 10nm work for these Tremont core Pentium and Atom chips as well, however this node will take time to arrive for desktop PCs for another season.
