HDDs lose consumer interest

In case there was any doubt that SSDs are the future of storage on our Seagate and Western Digital computers, they have presented their reports for the first quarter of 2016, which shows a significant drop in shipments of HDD units.

HDDs are less and less interesting for users

During the first quarter of 2016 Seagate has seen its shipments of hard drives reduced by 7.6% compared to the previous quarter, while Western Digital, the other major manufacturer of HDDs, has seen its shipments reduced by 3.6%. If we add both figures we have that HDD shipments have been reduced by 12.3%, a quite significant figure and that shows once again that SSDs are increasingly popular.

SSD prices are coming down heavily so buying a 240/250 GB and even 480/512 GB drive is no longer prohibitive and the advantages of flash storage over mechanical hard drives are more than obvious. If the trend of lowering the price per GB in SSDs continues at the current rate, HDDs will undoubtedly only make sense only in environments where enormous storage capacity is required.
