Gaming monitors doubled their sales in 2018
Table of contents:
Renewed interest in the gaming sector has given the PC industry a much-needed boost, helping computers upgrade and replace their 'old' components and peripherals. One of the segments that is growing the most is that of gaming monitors.
ASUS and Acer are the most chosen gaming monitors
Shipments of gaming monitors are forecast to reach 5.1 million units worldwide by the end of 2018, according to a new report from WitsView, a division of TrendForce.
WitsView, which defines a 'gaming' monitor to any screen that has a refresh rate above 100 Hz, commented that the sales of monitors of this class grew 100% compared to 2017.
Asus and Acer will maintain their first and second place in this segment, respectively, in the world ranking of shipments (sales). Beyond that, there is a small change in the market as AOC / Philips is expected to take third place, followed by Samsung. Last year, BenQ took home third place, followed by AOC / Philips fourth.
WitsView notes that over 95% of the gaming products shipped by Samsung this year are of the curved display variety. In fact, total sales of curved gaming monitors have increased, as the segment has eclipsed 50% of the market share in 2018. That's 23% more than last year. Meanwhile, the market share of flat panel LCD models in the sector is expected to drop from 77% to just 46%.
Anita Wang, senior research manager at WitsView, notes that a wave of replacement purchases at China's Internet cafes last year helped spur sales of gaming monitors with high refresh rates.
