While we haven't seen a single game yet taking advantage of the benefits of GeForce RTX, game developers have been experimenting recently. One of them is Roblox which, according to its technical director, Arseny Kapoulkine, the new Nvidia RTX series is 3 times faster in Vulkan with the new GeForce RTX when using Mesh Shading.

Mesh Shading Shown as One of Nvidia's Most Promising Turing Architecture Enhancements

In one particular scene that has 100 Happy Buddhas (1 Buddha is 1.087 million triangles), the traditional raster takes 17.2 ms on a GeForce RTX 2080. However, using Mesh Shading technology, it plays the same scene in 6.3 ms, which is almost 3 times faster. By making some additional tweaks by changing the meshlet indices to uint16, and overclcok, a whopping 20 billion triangles per second could be reached, which translates to reducing rendering time to just 5.5 ms.

The new Mesh Shading shaders bring the computational programming model to the graphics pipeline, as the threads are used cooperatively to generate compact meshes (meshlets) directly on the chip for consumption by the rasterizer. Applications and games that address high geometric complexity take advantage of the flexibility of the two-stage approach, which enables efficient removal techniques, level of detail, and procedural generation.

Mesh Shading is one of the most interesting innovations that have been introduced with Nvidia Turing graphics cards, it remains to be seen whether developers will take advantage of it or not, but it seems quite clear that this technology has great potential, much more than the RTX of which so much has been said.
