Micron announced at CES that they have begun distributing DDR5 DIMM RAM samples to select partners. We tell you inside.

Micron is one of the most powerful manufacturers of RAM, SSD, flash or SDRA M memory. Apparently, DDR5 RAM would not be as far as we expect. This has been hinted at by this company in its presentation of the CES 2020 in Las Vegas. This means that there are already platforms or processors that support DDR5. We tell you everything below.

DDR5, almost double the performance

According to Micron, the first generation of DDR5 RAM could offer 1.85 times better performance than the current DDR4. Among the different improvements, we find much higher data transfer speeds, since they could go up to 6400 MT / s.

On the other hand, DDR5 uses two independent 32/40 bit channels per module, which improves channel utilization. Also, this technology has improved the efficiency of the command bus because the channels will be able to bring their own 7-bit address and better refresh patterns.

However, the specification that has the most impact is that it will allow the design of chips with capacities greater than 16 GB per memory, such as reducing the voltage to 1.1 V. In addition, it will reduce power consumption, an interesting aspect for the world of servers.

It is crucial to increase the usable memory bandwidth and its capacity for those platforms that use many cores in their processors, such as servers.

Server companies, the chosen partners

As we have said above, the server companies would bethe chosen ones ” to obtain the samples of DDR5 RDIMM RAM. Micron has not revealed the specifications of the samples it has sent to its partners, but we can say that these companies already have platforms that work with DDR5 in their possession, so we believe that they will not take long to reach the market.

For his part, Tom Eby, Vice President and General Manager of Compute & Networking Business Unit at Micron, said the following:

Data center workloads will increasingly be challenged to extract value from explosive data growth in all aspects of our business and personal lives. The key to enabling these workloads is higher quality memory that is faster and denser. The fact that Micron has delivered samples of DDR5 RDIMMs represents a milestone for server platforms as it takes the industry one step closer to taking advantage of next-generation memory scalability.

We recommend the best RAM memory on the market

Do you think they will arrive on the market soon?
