2018 will be the year of the arrival of the first graphics cards with GDDR6 memory technology, which will offer a great improvement in bandwidth and energy efficiency compared to the current GDDR5.

GDDR6 memory will be with us very soon

Micron has announced that it already has its GDDR6 technology ready for graphics card manufacturers to implement it in the models that they put on the market in the first quarter of 2018. This will allow the new GPUs from AMD and Nvidia to have enough bandwidth to offer a significant improvement in the performance they offer. The graphic processors are more and more powerful and this implies the need for much faster memories, the GDDR6 seeks to be a much cheaper alternative than the HBM2.

Micron has already been a pioneer in the GDDR5X that has been used exclusively by Nvidia with its Pascal architecture, this memory has been able to reach 12 Gbps, which is a good jump compared to the 9 Gbps of the GDDR5 but it will be widely surpassed by GDDR6. The first GDDR6 memory chips will have a speed of 12-14 Gbps although they are expected to reach 16 Gbps as their development is polished.

This new memory technology uses FBGA180 packaging that increases the pitch to 0.75mm compared to 0.65mm in the FBGA190 packaging of the GDDR5 and GDDR5X. Another novelty is that it is moved to a dual channel architecture to offer higher bandwidth at the same operating frequency.

"Our initial progress is very promising." “Designing devices with the high speed signaling level required for these graphics memories is not an easy task. We are confident that our GDDR6 leads the industry in these metrics, and we share them because we believe it is important for our clients to see this progress. ”
