Micron already has its 96-layer nand technology ready, shipments will start shortly
Table of contents:
Micron is one of the world leaders in NAND memory manufacturing and the owner of Crucial, one of the most prestigious SSD brands on the market. Micron has commented that they are ready to start mass shipping their first 96-layer NAND storage chips in the second half of this year 2018.
Micron talks about its progress in developing 96-layer NAND and DRAM at 15/16 nm
The most used NAND chips today have a 32-layer or 64-layer design, with the arrival of the third generation, the 96-layer chips, it will be possible to manufacture new SSD devices with high storage capacities, very compact sizes and lower production costs. Compared to the current generation of 64-layer NAND, it should further reduce the prices of SSDs and, in general, of all products that make use of this storage technology.
We recommend reading our post on Samsung and SK Hynix have problems with 18 nm DRAM memories for servers
This was not the only novelty from Microm, since the company also expects that the production of 18 nm DRAM memory chips will exceed that of previous generations before the end of the year. Its next generation of 15/16 nm DRAM is on the way to start shipping in the second half of 2018. Micron has a robust roadmap for DRAM memory development, hopefully this will help improve availability at the level global and prices are reduced.
SSD prices have dropped a lot in recent months, after more than two years in which they have been very inflated, let's hope that RAM is the next to drop, something that would benefit all users.
