- Microsoft is considering using AMD's Picasso processors for a future Surface
Until now, Microsoft has always relied on Intel processors to nurture its line of Surface laptops, but this could change in the future. According to sources at The Verge site, Microsoft may be considering using AMD processors for its Surface Laptop device in 2019.
Microsoft would be getting tired of Intel
This shift from Microsoft to AMD's side could be motivated by the company's difficulties in developing Surface Go and other devices.
In a book recently published by Brad Sams (Beneath A Surface), it is suggested that Microsoft is eagerly awaiting Intel's 10nm processors, hoping that the new node will dramatically improve the performance of its low-power Surface line. In recent years, AMD has started to offer strong competition in its CPU market, moving to 7nm, which is an opportunity for Microsoft to move away from Intel.
Under Intel's pricing policy, the company does not allow its low-profile chips to reach much lower prices over time. As a company, AMD is more willing to accept lower margins to achieve higher sales volumes, giving Microsoft the opportunity to develop cheaper devices.
Microsoft is considering using AMD's Picasso processors for a future Surface
Microsoft is reportedly considering using AMD's Picasso processors for a future Surface device. Picasso would be a new APU chip in development that would replace the current Raven Ridge.
The year 2019 looks like it will be quite 'bumpy' in the processor segment, with the arrival of AMD's 7nm Zen 2 CPUs and 10nm CPUs from Intel.
