Microsoft tried to bring Windows 10 to all its devices with a strategy called 'Windows Everywhere', and although PCs, tablets and smartphones come with a similar interface, they are running a different version of the operating system or have different user interface features that separate them from each other. This Microsoft strategy has been half done in everything.

Microsoft aims for a universal Windows for all devices

As part of its efforts to take Windows everywhere, Microsoft aims to make Windows 10 look exactly the same on all its devices, including PCs, smartphones, and its XBOX console.

Microsoft is working on a new project called "Composable Shell" with which it wants to create a common shell that would be used on all compatible devices. Windows Shell is the component of the operating system that makes all the magic happen, as it essentially focuses on the desktop and its features, including the taskbar, Start menu, and action center.

Composable Shell in Redstone 3?

Although the plan is to make Windows 10 look almost the same on all devices, this does not mean that some unique features of each device are not preserved. Phones will continue to function as phones, and XBOX consoles will still have features that only make sense on these types of devices.

Microsoft has already hinted that this is the plan, and in recent months, speculation points to improvements coming from Windows 10-specific features, such as Continuum (now Modern Glass) , which could put it in line with desktops. It had been commented that Modern Glass would come with better support for the taskbar icons, window mode, in addition to other small improvements that would simulate a genuine PC experience.

These improvements are still in the labs, but Microsoft is clearly focusing its efforts on that and we will probably see them in the next Redstone 3 update, which would arrive in the middle of this year, possibly with the new Surface Phone.

The Creators Update, which is expected in April, is unlikely to have 'Composable Shell', so we will most likely see it in Redstone 3.

Do you think Microsoft will deliver on its promise of a 'universal' Windows for everyone?
