Unboxing and design

The MSI packaging is pretty familiar by now, the sleek black box is torn with a large, colorful image of the card inside. The MSI logo is in the upper left corner and the model below it.

Most of the back of the box is covered with features, with minimal system requirements and some basic specs near the center.

Once you remove the colorful cover, you find a cardboard box with everything inside. A foam cover protects the top. A black envelope contains all the documents and other additional inclusions. Beneath it we find the MSI GeForce RTX 2080 GAMING X TRIO wrapped in an ESD bag and secured in a huge block of foam.

The MSI GeForce RTX 2080 GAMING X TRIO is a huge card. In addition to the Duke series, Gaming X Trio is the only other line of cards from MSI that features a triple fan design with TORX 3.0 and ZERO FROZR fans. This MSI GeForce RTX 2080 GAMING X TRIO has 4 lighting areas on the front of the card, centered on the top and bottom between the fans.

A new version of the iconic MSI TORX fan further expands the limits of thermal performance. New adjustments to traditional fan blades create a focused airflow, which in turn is pushed down by the dispersing fan blades, to increase static pressure.

Dual ball bearings give the MSI TORX 3.0 a strong and durable core for years of trouble-free gaming. They also remain virtually silent while spinning under load, keeping the graphics card cool during intense and prolonged gaming sessions.

Airflow control technology guides airflow directly into heatpipes, providing more direct airflow to heat pipes and cooling them, while at the same time creating more surface area for air absorb more heat before leaving the heat sink.

Interior and PCB

To attenuate the heat generated by the GPU, the MSI GeForce RTX 2080 GAMING X TRIO uses a nickel-plated solid copper faceplate. It captures the heat from the GPU and transfers it to the heatpipes, for dissipation so it can stay cool. Every detail counts when creating the best thermal design, that's why MSI graphics cards use a premium thermal compound.

Backplate detail. As we can see, it serves both to stiffen the graphics card and internal cooling.

Beneath the entire heatsink is a premium, custom PCB that connects all vital components and enables them to communicate at lightning speed. The VRM phases are covered by a plate that is fused directly to the heat sink, for excellent cooling.

MSI's custom PCB design provides enhanced power delivery to push the card to its limits, and uses more layers and a larger surface area to provide maximum stability. To guarantee the best performance, two 8-pin connectors have been placed together with a third 6-pin connector, with this, there will be no lack of power, nor for the most extreme overclocking.

One of the decisive factors in performance is the quality of the components used. The components used by MSI have proven to be durable enough to withstand the torturing circumstances of extreme gaming, and overclocking for long-term use.

MSI GeForce RTX 2080 GAMING X TRIO is based on TU104 graphics core, consisting of 2944 CUDA Cores, 184 TMUs, and 64 ROPs. To this we must add no less than 64 RT cores and 368 Tensor Core. All tests have been passed with the filters to the maximum unless we indicate otherwise. In order to have adequate performance, we have carried out three types of tests: the first is the most common at Full HD 1920 x 1080, the second resolution is making the leap for 2K or 1440P (2560 x 1440P) gamers and the most enthusiastic with 4K (3840 x 2160). The operating system we have used has been Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and the latest drivers available from the Nvidia website.

What are we looking for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To differentiate the quality a bit, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum Fps in the tests that were thus possible:

Temperature and consumption

Regarding temperatures we have 31 ºC at rest and 68 ºC at maximum temperature, they are fantastic temperatures to be a custom heatsink with three fans. Good job MSI!

Very important fact: The consumption is of the entire team as a whole (only the tower). That is, from the wall socket.

Although its consumption is not "lighter", we ran into about 59 W at rest and 365 W at maximum power. The differences from the Founders Edition graphics card is not great. As we have mentioned, in temperatures we do gain a few degrees.

We think it is one of the best custom models that MSI has released. Aesthetically it is brutal and at first glance we already realize that it is a graphics card for years. Ideal for playing in Full HD, 2K resolutions and most games in 4K at +40 fps.

Its price in Spain ranges from 919 euros. We think it is a somewhat high price, but if we look at the entire catalog of personalized graphics cards, it is about these prices. It is up to you to assess whether you are interested in buying a 2080 Ti, a 2070 or a 1080 Ti.
