Are you looking for a gamer laptop, slim as an ultrabook and with keyboard lighting? A couple of years ago it was unthinkable to find something like this. Don't worry that it exists and is called MSI GS73VR with an i7 Skylake processor, 16GB of memory, combination of SSD + 2TB hard drive and a GTX 1060 graphics card. Do you want to know more about this laptop? Don't miss our review!

Once again we thank MSI for the trust placed in the transfer of the product for its analysis:

Technical Characteristics MSI MSI GS73VR

Unboxing and design

The laptop arrives in a large cardboard box and on its cover we do not see any image of the product, only a black background and a large logo of MSI Dragon . When we look at the rear area we witness a label with all its characteristics and the specific model.

Once we open and extract all the accessories we find the following bundle:

  • MSI GS73VR gamer laptop .Instruction manual and quick guide. 18W power supply and power cord.

The MSI GS73VR is a model with dimensions of 41.18, 28.49 x 1.96 cm and a weight of 2.43 KG that make it almost an ultrabook, but it is still the thinnest gaming laptop on the market. And believe us, it's amazing.

It has a 17.3-inch and a 4K resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels . The screen is made on a TN 16: 9 panel manufactured by Chi Mei with the model CMN1747 (P / N: N173HHE-G32) . The reason for choosing this panel instead of the IPS is for the refresh rate is 120 Hz and its special design for games. Of course, it has Antiglare technology to improve viewing angles.

Among its connections we find:

  • 1 x Mini DisplayPort1 x HDMI1 x Headphone output1 x Microphone input1 x USB 3.1 Type-C3 x USB 3.01 x USB 2.01 x RJ45

As we can see in both images on each side, it includes small racks that allow the equipment to cool better with the hot air outlet.

In the back area we find serigraph “Stealth” with black and red tones. While on the front we have the typical status LEDs on the right side of it.

The bottom of the laptop imposes, since we find several grids that allow the cooling system to take the necessary air to dissipate all the heat generated during its operation.

We look at the keyboard and we are in front of a high quality mechanical unit signed by the great company Steelseries and which uses chewing gum type switches. Both the touch and the path of the keys is quite pleasant so it will be quite comfortable to use, it is more we get used to it very quickly while we are testing it for 7 days.

As a good high-end notebook gamer it incorporates an RGB LED lighting system. What does this mean? That we configure the keyboard with different lighting options and on a color scale of 16.8 million.

Above the keyboard we find the audio output, the 4 2W speakers plus a 3W subwoofer that are powered by Nahimic Dynaudio 2 to achieve remarkable sound quality for what is common in notebooks.

Hardware and internal quality

As for the processor we find an i7 6700HQ, with 4 cores and 8 threads based on the Skylake architecture at a frequency of 2.6 GHz and a turbo frequency of 3.5 GHz with a TDP of 45W.

For the most curious, that the processor ends in -HQ means that it is a socket FCBGA 1440 processor, which indicates that it is soldered to the board and not on the socket, a decision that unfortunately prevents us from changing it for a higher model.

In RAM memory they have opted for a 16 GB kit in dual channel, a very generous amount to go over several years and nothing out of the ordinary in these ranges. They are DDR4L (1.2V) modules as required by Skylake for greater energy efficiency and superb performance.

On storage MSI has opted for a SATA M2 drive this time, specifically with 512 GB enough to install the operating system and all your applications. As extra storage it incorporates a data hard disk it is a mechanical unit of 2 TB and 7200 rpm. Although if you buy it, we recommend that you replace it with a 500GB or higher SSD so that current games always run at maximum speed, the equipment generates less heat and above all we do not have vibrations.

The graphics section is quite remarkable with the presence of an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card with a total of 1280 CUDA Cores accompanied by 6 GB of GDDR5 memory with a 192-bit interface. With these specifications we can play any game (the processor is already equivalent to an i5-6600K) in Ultra and without messing around with Full HD resolution. This team is perfectly qualified to run any game on a 1440p screen with an external monitor, virtual reality and everything you want to throw at it. You have nothing to envy of a desktop computer.

What better way to see the laptop, than good images of it working and the quality of the screen at its different viewing angles.

Test of performance

MSI Dragon Center allows us to personalize, monitor, take control from your smartphone with various applications. The first contact with her has been quite good and we have seen a good evolution with respect to previous generations.

WE RECOMMEND YOU Kingston A2000 1TB Review in Spanish (Complete Analysis)

Between tests we have passed normal 3DMARk Fire Strike, its Ultra 4K version and Unigine Heaven. Although the power in SLI is not the same as that of a desktop SLI, it is true that it comes close enough. We have also been able to verify that the read and write rates of the Crystal Disk Mark of the M2 SSD that it incorporates complies with that established by the manufacturer and see how its RAID of SSD M2 disks works.

And here the performance tests with several very demanding titles and the most played of the moment.

It is very surprising that the graphics card temperatures are as good with both its turbo option as its normal option. With the turbo we achieve that it does not exceed 78ºC by having all the fans at 100%. While if it is deactivated they rise 10ºC.

Final words and conclusion about MSI GS73VR

The MSI GS73VR is the thinnest and most powerful 17.3-inch notebook on the market at graphics levels. It features top-notch hardware: i7 processor , 16GB of memory, 512GB M.2 SSD, and an optional 2TB disk for data. All this together with the fabulous 6 GB GTX 1060 makes it one of the most interesting mobile devices we can buy.

We recommend reading our guide to the best laptops on the market.

Once all the tests have been passed, we have verified that it is a computer capable of playing at Full HD, 1440p and Virtual Reality resolutions such as HTC Vive. If they tell us 5 years ago that we could have such a powerful and thin equipment at the same time, we would not believe it.

As a weak point we find that it is somewhat noisy with a lot of processing load, but in such a thin computer it was to be expected. At rest it is a grave.

It is currently available for a price of 2399 euros and there is a version with less SSD: 256 GB and Full HD screen for 2199 euros.
